What is a feasible warm country to live in

with a UK passport.

I'm feeling fed up tonight of the UK and Scotland specifically. Yes we've had blue so this week but summers are so cold. I'm also totally fed up of UK politics.

Given the limitations on a UK passport where is a realistic country to move to that is warm and has a decent set up to grow old in - I'm getting on so have to think about healthcare and pension. Can WFH at the moment. Spain seems the obvious choice but unsure about Brexit issues.

I’m not sure but will read the replies with interest.

I think I heard that some countries plan to introduce new visa schemes ?

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 26/01/2023 23:09

Not sure of a good answer for the country question but be aware that WFH doesn't mean you could WFH in another country, there are tax implications for U.K. companies with overseas workers so they might not be able to slow you to continue to work for them.

Honper · 26/01/2023 23:10

Yeah you're fucked by brexit now.

QueenOfHiraeth · 26/01/2023 23:10

Portugal is gorgeous, much nicer than Spain as they seem to like the British. We have friends who moved there so it must be possible

FTMFML · 26/01/2023 23:10

Also following... unrealistically but I am also particularly sick of the UK... grass ain't always greener though!

mathanxiety · 26/01/2023 23:12

Gibraltar.
Maybe Greece? But you don't have an EU passport.

Somewhere in the middle east?

TheVanguardSix · 26/01/2023 23:13

Portugal seems to be the place to go:

Howeverdoyouneedme · 26/01/2023 23:18

Came on to say Portugal. Was there on holiday recently and met a few Brits living there working remotely. It’s also lovely.

Honper · 26/01/2023 23:18

Gibraltar is about it. And Gibraltar is shit.

I understand your thinking OP, I'm entirely sick of the UK myself and our living standards are only going to get worse. I even looked in to one of those mad remote islands where they pay you to go and live there but apparently everyone is inbred and drunk and I can get that here so no real point.

Cheerfulcharlie · 26/01/2023 23:22

Middle East would not be good for growing old unless you have lots of money for healthcare & general care if needed.

CombatBarbie · 26/01/2023 23:23

Gibraltar.....

WhatIsThisMadness999 · 26/01/2023 23:29

I work with people in !adrid, it’s been 6c this week, they are all complaining about the cold as their houses are not insulated for it

WhatIsThisMadness999 · 26/01/2023 23:29

Madrid obviously. Wish we had an edit feature

MrsEdnaWelthorpe · 26/01/2023 23:31

Ecuador

I was thinking NZ or Aus! English speaking and not ridiculously hot if you chose the right place! Depends on your age, skills and whether you pass the points scheme. Note though, that its no always degree level that are on the short list for skilled jobs in need and might get fast tracked. Does your company have an office in either country you could transfer to for a year or 2 to try it out?

Honper · 26/01/2023 23:50

New Zealand is boring, Australia is full of chavs and they're both on the other side of the world. And you have to have visas. OP as you're in Scotland I'd say your first step is vote SNP then hope that you can get back into Europe once you become independent.

As an immigrant to NZ, I love this country. But I would not choose to retire here from the UK in my later years without substantial resources. We have friends moving back to the UK to retire simply due to costs.

Food and housing are expensive. Healthcare is good if you are near a main centre but difficult if not. The trip back to the UK is gruelling and expensive.

It is far from Boris Johnson though which is a bonus.

What an unpleasant generalisation Honper.
I lived in New Zealand for years. It is certainly not a boring country.
I have known many Australians and the majority were charming and cultivated people. If you can't cope with their robust sense of humour, then you must be very boring indeed.

Lincolnforever · 27/01/2023 05:58

Portugal really seem to have themselves sorted out!

I'd go for Lefkada in Greece, beautiful climate and not actually an island so health care is better. Lots of retirees and English is widely spoken.

ChocolatSouris · 27/01/2023 06:34

I used to live and work in northern Spain. It could be cold in winter but invariably sunny and just brighter skies.

I’m not up to date with current requirements for non EU passport holders but the last I read was that you need 500k savings. Also loved Portugal but found the language harder than Spanish.

Threebutterflies · 27/01/2023 06:37

Why do you say Gibraltar is shit ?

Threebutterflies · 27/01/2023 06:39

@Honper sorry that was for you

Well said! Honper only seems to be able to come up with negative thoughts about other parts of the world - as you right said, they themselves sound boring!

If cold is your main downer, moving to somewhere in the south or south west of England would make some difference compared with Scotland. Especially the extra half hour of daylight in winter, and in the south west, the 20 minutes later time of sunset.

Agree that the 52% have removed some of the other options.
