ADHD mushroom supplements

user1496262496 · 26/01/2023 22:08

I am wanting to try lionsmane or other mushroom supplements for my ADHD. I am a bit confused with the amount of choice… and some of them involve coffee. I thought coffee was cryptonite for ADHD!

it would be great to know what has worked for people. Thanks in advance (incase I get distracted and don’t look here for a while… or go on a side quest and forget about the whole thing. You know how it is!

Coffee causes the adhd brain to feel sleepy .

Ricco12 · 26/01/2023 22:10

Anything stimulating has the reverse effect on adhd brain.

user1496262496 · 26/01/2023 22:11

I might start coffee
again then. I was told by a teacher friend to stop it when I got diagnosed. I just trusted what they said cos they taught lots of ADHD students :/

Is it the psilocybin you’re after? There are a few trials going on in London, might be worth looking at the research to help with a decision. There is also a theory that coffee slows our brains in a similar way to dexamphetamine. I know coffee doesn’t make me wired.

This isn't true at all. Can you provide some evidence? I have ADHD and coffee really makes me hyper.

I am not sure. The main way that ADHD fucks up my life is that I talk over people. Like I am terrified that I will forget what to say next.

Also anything that will help me be more organised.

I got diagnosed, and now I am a bit at a loss as to what to do next. Aside from traditional meds, I read about the (expensive!) mushroom coffee and powder and to be honest I am just desperate to have a normal life like I see other people having

Caffeine stimulates the nervous system and boosts dopamine production , which causes a calming effect and helps focus.

I was told this when I was diagnosed a number of years ago when I refused meds. We spoke about what other alternatives people found to work.

But also if you Google it, it will explain why coffee can be useful for ADHD .

I agree, I can take caffeine late at night and it doesn't by affect me like it does my husband.
It definitely isn't stimulating like he feels.

Ricco12 · 26/01/2023 23:08

Why are you at a loss, so what if you interrupt people. I'm the same and anyone close to me excepts that I do it. I apologise as soon as I've done it, I know I shouldn't but it just blurts out.

Don't feel you need to put chemicals into yourself to change you because of others

Some things I found work for me

Running - lots of it
5HTP - Holland and Barrett sell it
Making sure I take my fish oil supplements .
Staying off sugar and processed crap food
Getting good sleep

And acceptance of who I am . My life might be a jumbled mess at times but so what.

CBT is also having a big impact on my son who also isn't on medication

Miserablehag · 26/01/2023 23:10

I am undiagnosed (out of choice!) but absolutely have ADHD. I take a standard lion’s mane supplement and have done for a couple of months and have noticed a small difference - i can definitely get a bit more focus than typical - not perfect though. Of course, it could be placebo, but hey ho.

Gilead · 26/01/2023 23:26

Please be careful with 5-HTP in can react badly with some medications, particularly SSRIs, and can cause Seratonin Syndrome.

Because feedback from
recen job interviews told me that I irritated the interviewers because of it. I was trying to wait till they had finished and counting to 3 before answering, but I kept interrupting, like I couldn’t tell that they hadn’t finished talking. This thing is ruining my life

@user1496262496
i would before you seek out all sorts of different remedies, try some CBT type therapy first.
I have ADHD and don’t take meds, but I have trained myself over the years (I’m in my sixties now) to be hyper organised. My dd (28) chose to take meds a couple of years ago, he says it was like glasses for his brain. Dd2 needs meds but isn’t ready. Point is we are all different and have different approaches. Take your time to find out what works best for you.

NocturnalClocks · 26/01/2023 23:31

Have you considered trying the standard medication? It's effective for the vast majority of people.

Psilocybin is the chemical that makes you hallucinate, and it's only found in a few mushrooms. It's not in lions mane.

Those trials sounds really interesting though. I presume it involves microdosing?

Lions mane is supposed to help you focus as apparently improves connections in the brain. I don't think there's much clinical evidence for it (yet) but I'm trying it anyway. Along with medication.

mosi2014 · 13/11/2023 16:51

I've been trying a mushroom gummy which has a combo of various mushrooms and I have noticed a difference. They have Lion's mane in. I stopped them for a bit over the Summer when I forgot to order more (duh!) and I realised that they had been helping so I am back on them. I prefer the gummies as I don't like the powder stuff as it tastes grim.

Yes this. What a load of bollocks snake oil supplement shit on this thread. Just take the tested and legal medication for your condition FFS!

TheBunnyLover · 13/11/2023 16:54

Interesting thread, thank you OP. I am currently awaiting diagnosis.

When I was young I used to be a dancer in clubs, and I'd drink vodka and redbull all night and be straight to sleep when I got home! I never associated this with ADHD.I really must learn more about it.

BiscuitsandPuffin · 13/11/2023 16:54

ARGH ZOMBIE sorry!

StellarPerformance · 13/11/2023 16:58

This is too serious to take advice about from randoms on the internet who know nothing about you and your lifestyle, medical or medication history. Within a handful of posts you've already had conflicting advice.
Take informed advice from professional sources. It's a very individual thing. What has worked anecdotally for someone on mumsnet may well not be good for you.

I have the same thing, why is this ADHD? I just put it down to confidence and the fact that tech has frazzled our requirement and therefore ability to communicate face to face.

Why does everyone have ADHD these days? As soon as I see it, I roll my eyes and surely I'm not alone in that? It's not helpful for everyone to desperately try and validate their behaviour and symptoms with a label and try to fix with pseudo/mushrooms.

Why aren't we/healthcare looking for the genuine answers in this? I fear because the answers are glaringly obvious and too difficult to attain. We won't switch off the screens and change our diet. Not to mention the shit tonne of ££ big pharma make from these off-the-scale diagnoses.

TotalOverhaul · 13/11/2023 17:05

I have ADHD and drink gallons of coffee. I can fall asleep straight after a double espresso. It's quite useful for controlling the racing thoughts. But possibly not for everyone. ADHD definitely isn't one-size-fits-all. Medication needs to be tailored to each individual.

medianewbie · 13/11/2023 17:12

Can anyone say what the 'standard meds' are pls? My Ds, 19, had a dx of ASD & Dyslexia but clearly (to me) also has ADHD. It would be Helpful to know what meds to ask for ?

You can't ask for meds. You need to be diagnosed by a psychiatrist who may recommend trialling medication as there are many different ones and they work differently on individuals.
