Penicillin every 6 hours - would you wake 3 year old?

DD3 has a chest infection, Dr tonight gave penicillin for 10 days - 5ml 4 times per day every 6 hours. She’s had some before going to bed, I’m planning on giving her some at midnight. DD has had lots of antibiotics before but never for this long or with the specific instruction of every 6 hours.

Have I got this all wrong or would you give it at midnight too?

I wouldnt wake. Last thing at night and first thing in the morning with the other doses spaced in between is ok.

I would do the same. Good sleep is really important for healing as well.

Agree with previous advice.

Make sure the medicine is ready, and give it her, with a drink of water as soon as she wakes.

That was my instinct too, let her sleep. If she wakes herself I’ll give her some but it’s so important for them to rest as well

Split the 4 doses across the hours she is awake.

Agree with other posters, this is what my GP said when I asked (DS recently had to take the same).

I would waken her. As she is just starting the course I think you should wake her up. It will only take few seconds and she won't waken properly, and probably even remember it. As the days progress, may be in 3 to 4 days depending how much she has improved, let her miss that dose.

FTMbg · 26/01/2023 21:06

When I've queried they've always said no don't wake them, fit in 4 doses between waking and bedtime.

As PP says, you don’t have to. What I’ve often done is just before I go to bed, sit them up and give them the evening dose using a syringe. They never actually wake up.

KangarooKenny · 26/01/2023 21:11

No, just spread it during the day.

Namechanger355 · 26/01/2023 21:13

I’m currently on antibiotics every 2 hours and when I asked i was told it’s during waking hours.

scrivette · 26/01/2023 21:26

I have done it in the past when starting the antibiotics so probably would tonight. As PP suggested wake them up, use the syringe and they barely wake.

LaFemmeDamnee · 26/01/2023 21:28

I was on medication that was meant to be taken every 6 hours when I was discharged from hospital, and the nurse cheerily told me to split the doses through the day as "you won't be up at 3am." I had a newborn baby and believe me I did not miss one single 3am dose. But anyway let her sleep, though you may find she wakes coughing anyway, in which case I'd pop a dose in quickly.

I would advise 4 times a day rather than 6 hourly.
Easiest to do it at breakfast, dinnertime, teatime and before bed.
