Any decent podcasts for a long solo drive?

Tomorrow I have a 7hr round trip for a 2 hour meeting. Hooray. I'm going to need some decent podcasts to break up the tedium, and am after recommendations. Will consider anything pretty much - current affairs, history, drama, classical music - except those lifestyle podcasts where people chat exclusively to guests that have chatty lifestyle podcasts of their own, and it all feels like a big circle of arse licking.

Stuff I've liked recently:
I'm not a Monster - The Shamima Begum Story
The Listening Service
Sounds Like a Cult
Behind the Bastards
Tracks
In and Out of the Kitchen
The Boy in the Woods

I am currently listing to a podcast on bbc player called I am not a monster about Shamima Begum. There are only three episodes so far so probably only an hour and a half time wise but it is interesting. Admittedly the story is interesting but I find about journalist's methods of doing research in complicated situations equally interesting.

I would like to second diary of a CEO. It's absolutely fantastic.

The Battersea Poltergeist
Uncanny
Witch Farm

All three are on BBC sounds.

Empire

Another vote for Criminal, and This Is Love here. Perfect, perfect podcasts! The This Is Love episode called “Something Large and Wild” is one of my favourite episodes of anything, ever!

PolarBlair · 26/01/2023 20:37

Teachers Pet is the best podcast I've ever listened to. It's about a mother of two young children who just disappeared in the 80s and the police listened to her husband who said she probably ran away to join a cult. The journalist investigates her disappearance 30+ years later. As the episodes were released people came forward with evidence that had been missed at the time. 10/10

I loved Intrigue: Tunnel 29 on BBC. It’s the story of a man who dug a tunnel under the Berlin Wall. I knew very little about that time in East and West Germany and it was absolutely riveting.

excellent, I knew you lovely lot wouldn't let me down! I shall download a few thing evening Flowers

Bible John - Creation of a Serial Killer, BBC Sounds. Really interesting deep dive into the cases, focussing on the women victims and the children and families left behind.

uhtredbebbanburg · 26/01/2023 20:59

Shreds and Mattan the Injustice of a Hanged Man. Both on bbc sounds and both about Tiger Bay in Cardiff which is a community I knew nothing about. Especially the second one haunted me for a long time.

Geetars · 26/01/2023 21:01

Crypto Queen - awesome!

PermanentTemporary · 26/01/2023 21:02

Placemarking to read all the answers!

Another vote for The Rest is History - it's actually quite tricky to pick favourites and the series is getting huge but I really liked Worst Parties in History, their short series on Putin, and some of the World Cup series on the different countries involved.

Agreed on The Coming Storm, and although he's a bit marmite on here, I liked Jon Ronson's Things Fell Apart.

poorbuthappy · 26/01/2023 21:04

Diary of a CEO. Louis theroux Davina McCall very much enjoyed. Also hidden brain.

WFHbore2023 · 26/01/2023 21:08

Redhanded - true crime podcast, 4 year backlog and plenty of cases available.

Teach me a lesson - Greg James and his wife speak to a different teacher each episode, some very interesting episodes.

Everything else I listen to is in the comedy vein;
parenting hell
Katherine Ryan- telling everybody everything
My therapist ghosted me
Off menu

Blendandmix · 26/01/2023 21:08

Serial season 1
Cold
Small town dicks

Blendandmix · 26/01/2023 21:08

@PieonaBarm thank you! I was sure I had listened to I'm not a monster but it was about someone else. Was driving me crazy

GingerHippo · 26/01/2023 21:11

The Lady Vanishes is my favourite, so interesting

MargaritaRita · 26/01/2023 21:12

Obscene, the Dublin scandal, BBC sounds, narrated by the delicious voice of Adrian Dunbar.

It is fascinating, about an episode of bizarre happenings, murder, intrigue, political involvement and lots more. True story.

lobeliasb · 26/01/2023 21:20

Comedy:

My Dad Wrote a Porno (I was actually crying laughing at this one)

History/General Knowledge:

Tides of History
Hardcore History (Blueprint for Armageddon about WW1 is excellent)
Stuff You Should Know

True Crime (these are all series that follow one case):

Your Own Backyard (this podcast actually helped solve a crime)
Dirty John
The Shrink Next Door
Paper Ghosts
True Crime Bullshit
Bear Brook
Cold

@AnnPerkins Thank you for recommending Intrigue. I mistakenly downloaded a different series to the one you recommended (The Ratline), but it was excellent, so I shall certainly listen to the other three series.

Thanks again all for the recommendations - I am sure I will work my way through the rest of them.

Fake heiress…it’s been around a while but really well done and mind boggling that people could be taken in.

@TheTurn0fTheScrew I've just added The Ratline to my list as well.
