Care job no dbs/crb check

Hi, just about to start a new care job (no personal care) with a relatively new company. I asked about the dbs/crb check and they were a bit shady about it, said they'd probably do one once I'd worked for them for 3 months. That's a bit odd isn't it?

It's not just odd it's totally wrong.

Have you checked them out on the CQC website? In my area we have a couple of companies offering personal care but not CQC reg which is illegal. You company sound well dodgy.

Ridiculousradish · 26/01/2023 12:39

Hmm just had a Google and appears I might not need one if not doing personal care. Just seems a bit dodgy as will be working with vulnerable adults.

They shouldn’t be operating as a care company if they won’t do the basics.

You need one definitely, pm me the company if you want and il do some research

Ridiculousradish · 26/01/2023 12:43

They've advertised themselves as "home help."

Thanks for the replies. I've checked the CQC website and they're not on there.

@booboo82 I'm going to PM you

If they are not registered as a health or social care provider, they won't be registered with the CQC. Not all personal care work is considered health or social care - it depends on exactly what it entails.

But, regardless of CQC registration, they absolutely should be obtaining a DBS check if you will be working with vulnerable adults.

LIZS · 26/01/2023 12:47

Unless you would be under constant supervision of someone with one it is not ok, even then best practice would require one. Spends very dubious and what other corners do they cut.

Ridiculousradish · 26/01/2023 12:49

Yeah it just doesn't add up.

I've got an induction tomorrow, so am going to go and see what they say. Next step is a shadow shift.

Run a mile. Care jobs are 10 a penny so you'll have another by the end of the week. There is no way I would work anywhere that didn't request a dbs.

katseyes7 · 26/01/2023 12:59

I applied for a care job a few years ago. One of the first things l had to do was apply for a DBS check.
Even before they'd take my application any further. This sounds dodgy.

stbrandonsboat · 26/01/2023 13:01

Run a mile. You're putting yourself at risk if you work at an unregistered place.

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 26/01/2023 13:03

It’s a home help, not personal care and not a care agency. There may not be a requirement for a DBS but I’d be concerned either way.

justgettingthroughtheday · 26/01/2023 13:04

Run a mile!!! And report them to CQC and the council whilst you are at it!

Ridiculousradish · 26/01/2023 13:11

When I asked how they'd built up their client base they said a lot was through word of mouth but they also get referrals from social workers/services. They must be known to the council and be official if that's true? Or maybe it's not true. I don't know.

OP posts:
MoreTeaLessCoffee · 26/01/2023 13:11

They won't need a cqc registration if they're providing home helps. That's only for providers of personal care and nursing. So no point reporting there and they are not doing anything wrong in that respect.

Here's the government's checker on whether a role needs a dbs or not. You can fill in the details about your job and then you will know what they should be asking for,if any :

IHeartGeneHunt · 26/01/2023 13:15

I needed one for my care home job and I'm just a cleaner!

WrendaleCountryDogs · 26/01/2023 13:15

Yeah that's incredibly odd..and wrong. I work in care and we weren't allowed to start without DBS check. Had to pay for it myself and after 3 months got the money back

Ridiculousradish · 26/01/2023 13:19

Yeah I'm a bit confused. I did numerous care jobs pre DS and always needed a dbs check. They said something about people often having one from a previous job and it can therefore roll over. That's not the case for me though.

I'm not going to report them for anything, I'm just a bit confused by it all. It all feels a bit unprofessional and shambolic.

highdrylowerwetter · 26/01/2023 13:22

This sounds really dodgy, OP

Ridiculousradish · 26/01/2023 13:30

Thanks for all the replies. I'm going to go tomorrow and see what happens. I'm sort of intrigued now.

OP posts:
Ridiculousradish · 29/01/2023 09:51

Went to the induction and have decided against it. Nice people who obviously care, but as a previous poster said, what other corners are they cutting? I'd be working with mostly older clients with dementia, giving out medication. I just find it utterly baffling I wouldn't need a dbs check!

OP posts:
Ridiculousradish · 29/01/2023 09:54

I asked if there was a chance to work towards any qualifications but apparently not. Also any meetings are unpaid as they just don't currently have the funds to pay people for them right now. It's all too uncertain.
