Missing adult teeth on dental x ray

Finally managed to get dc a long overdue dental appointment yesterday. Dc aged 12 still has some baby teeth so dentist did an x Ray which showed some of his adult teeth are completely missing which is why his baby teeth are still there. I've googled this and it says it can be caused by trauma, infection or genetic problems. Ds hasn't had any trauma or infection. He had the cgh microarray genetic test done when he was a baby which came back "a variation of normal" whatever that means. He also has a 9 year old brother who has a cleft lip/palate, not sure if that is genetically relevant or not. Anyone had any experience of this?

I had this with 2 lower molars. No family history of this or cleft etc

but my baby teeth started sinking into my jaw bone around 18. I was sent to orthodontist at hospital who said they needed to be removed as it would result in abscesses

Because they’d receded so far into gum and bone and impacted it was a general anaesthetic to remove as they needed to saw into my jaw. they used 4 clips to hold my jaws wide open during surgery

it was one of the worst surgeries I have had to recover from and I’ve had 11 ops . Not from where they removed the teeth, but from 4 gigantic mouth ulcers that wouldn’t heal where they’d put the clips. It’s 40 plus years ago and I can still remember the pain 😱

I had 2 adult teeth missing - top and bottom molars both on one side. As a child my dentist removed the baby teeth and then the mirror 2 adult teeth on the opposite side so I wouldn't end up with a lop sided smile.

I do now wish they'd just left the baby teeth in place but it's too late now and I trust that the dentist was doing what he felt was best at the time.

I never got wisdom teeth either. The teeth I do have though are very strong and healthy, just a bit lacking in quantity.

It's really just one of those things. Both my children have all their adult teeth.

Hi, just found this thread. My 10 year old is missing 12 adult teeth - went to the orthodontist today and he's being referred to Blackburn hospital for them - also needs 3 baby teeth removing as some teeth are trapped above and coming in at a crazy angle. How's it going with yours?

My cleft affected kids were missing adult teeth, so I would think it was genetically linked

UnicorseTime · 12/12/2023 21:29

Hello LoveSpud. My kids are similar, and eldest had a little chain attached to one tooth that's gone on a little adventure instead of coming down (they and hoped taking the baby tooth would be enough.)

That must have been quite a shock.

I had no Adult teeth and my kids don't have many but it is quite rare.

Have you looked at Ectodermal Dysplasia? Often associated with multiple missing teeth? I don't think the hospital would have mentioned it if I hadn't said I had it and asked if it meant they did!

The teeth can also be growing in the wrong place, one of mine was later located in the roof of my mouth.

I have one that has never turned up and I am in my 40s.

Hello Lovespud. You might have seen upthread that my son is missing ten adult teeth, so quite similar to yours. This thread popped back up because of your addition, and I was interested to be reminded of our situation nearly a year ago now. Just to say, it now looks like they will be able to close quite a few of the gaps with the braces, so he will hardly need any false teeth. It's a lot better than when we were first referred. Good luck on your journey.

Oh wow thats a fantastic result!

My girls have braces but will need substantial restorative work after so will go back from local hospital to London hospital at the end of this block of treatment.

I've got 2 adult teeth in my jaw that have never come through. No wisdom teeth, either. I'm mid 60s

My children have missing teeth, DS now 24 was missing 5, had one or two that were undersized and also some baby teeth were sinking into his jaw that he had to have removed under GA. He had extensive brace work and crowns on the smaller teeth under the NHS. They did a great job and he now has a lovely smile with just one pre molar missing that you can only see when he opens his mouth very wide.
DD now 21 had similar but two missing incisors that again were corrected with braces to pull the adjacent teeth apart and then a Maryland bridge installed to give her a run of all very nice teeth so again, her smile is lovely.
My father and grandmother had baby teeth high up in their gums that grew out over their adult teeth and also my brother is affected by missing two top teeth so definitely genetic for us. No other health issues though.

I’m 49 and I have two teeth missing on the lower right side, I think 4 and 5. My baby teeth fell out and I never had any adult teeth there. My dd2 has inherited this from me as I did from my dm. I am of Eastern European heritage and it’s quite common there.
My dad is 14 and will need an op soon as she has teeth that are in her palette like I had that won’t grow out without help.
