Not the most exciting but tell me about your water flosser

So it’s pay day and I’m going to treat myself to a water flosser but so many on Amazon I haven’t got a clue what I should be looking for.

Anyone got any recommendations or just what I should be looking for in a flosser. 😉

Interested as spend a fair bit on Tepes

I bought the Fairywell one (cheap). It's good. They're a bit tricky to get the hang of, but it's amazing how much 'stuff' comes out. I can't floss my back teeth and some front ones overlap, so this really helps.

Never used one how does it work? In the past I used a thin interdental brush on my electric toothbrush and it caused inflammation of the gum. I had to have surgery. Is it safe?

LiftyLift · 26/01/2023 07:56

It literally just squirts water jets at your teeth and dislodges food. It’s messy at the start and you have to lean over the sink with your mouth wide open to let the water dribble out. It’s not as fancy as the name suggests, but they do a good job.

Sparklingbrook · 26/01/2023 08:10

I love mine. I have a Waterpik. Use it twice a day. Still use floss and Tepe brushes but I love the way the Waterpik makes my mouth feel v clean.
Top tip-use lukewarm water not cold.
It takes a bit of practice to get the knack!

TheBestTeam · 26/01/2023 08:20

Waterpik for me too. It's brilliant, easy to use and does a great job. I floss. And use the little stick things too. I get top marks from the dental hygeinist 😁

nex18 · 26/01/2023 08:23

The first time I used mine, I sprayed the whole bathroom. I’m a bit tidier now but I generally use it in the shower so it doesn’t matter if I spray everywhere. I agree with using lukewarm water. I find I can taste the muck being rinsed off so it’s definitely helping. No idea what brand it is, was from Amazon in lockdown when I was due a dental appointment.

ohdizzy · 26/01/2023 08:23

Well it sits unused on the bathroom shelf taking up space and gathering dust.

Tried to use it, several times ended up spraying water all over the bathroom/my face etc and couldn't be arsed to keep going.

lightinthemirrorstormyoutside · 26/01/2023 08:26

So two votes for Waterpik - okay I'll have a look. Thank you

Don't get Philips. I've had 3 replaced by them as they stop working after a year.

This is mine. It says Out of Stock on their site but I think I got it from Boots.

Mine is a godsend as I have two gum issues that this sorts out as long as I use it every other night. I use a counter top device, not a rechargeable. I won’t recommend the make as it’s broken a few times 🤭

NonyaBizniz · 26/01/2023 09:05

Mine was useless as it dribbled water into my mouth rather than do any effective cleaning. I spent ages making sure I had charged it up correctly and then threw it away.

DRS1970 · 26/01/2023 09:10

I use a water pick. I bought the waterproof one so I could use it in the shower, as they can be a bit messy to use. It has definitely improved my oral health, as is noticeable at my dental inspections.

BodyShapeWoes · 26/01/2023 09:13

I have a water pick one

It’s great I only use it 3 x week not everyday like your supposed to

really does help dislodge all the gunk between my teeth and makes my mouth feel healthier

takes some getting used to, so you don’t soak yourself and the bathroom

OnMyWayToSenility · 26/01/2023 09:14

I was thinking of getting one too
Doing it in the shower is a great idea!

My waterpik is the same. It's a bathroom ornament.

Sparklingbrook · 26/01/2023 09:18

I couldn’t get the hang of it for the first few attempts, but once you get the knack it’s great. Trial and error.

CleanBedding · 26/01/2023 09:24

The trick is to use warm water and to turn it on and off while it's in your mouth. Don't imagine you can watch yourself flossing in a mirror - you have to do it leaning over the sink. Start off on the gentlest setting first until your gums are used to it and build up. When you use it again, let the left over cold water that is in the tubes spray in the sink first so the warm water comes through.

I have an unknown brand water flosser from Amazon and I love it!

Ladyofthelake53 · 26/01/2023 09:24

I use regular dental floss but are these water flossers better ?

Novemberhater · 26/01/2023 09:29

Don't buy a cheap one. Mine broke after a month. I now have a Waterpic and it's great. It's amazing how much it removes. It also prevents infection around crowns and implants.

Timeandtune · 26/01/2023 10:03

100 % recommend the Waterpik. Takes a bit of getting used to but definitely works

FinallyHere · 26/01/2023 10:10

Another vote for Waterpik and all the comments above about starting with the softest setting and working up, hanging over the sink and turning it off and on as you go along to keep the mess to a minimum. Get on with a convenient on/off switch on the handle to make that easier.

I got one after reading about them here on MN, by coincidence just before lockdown. No dental hygienist appointment for two years and my dentist was genuinely 'gob smacked' on my next appointment.

Still use electric toothbrush and tape first, then finish with waterpik. Disclosing tablets every so often to check in still doing it right. My teeth have never felt so good and now bleeding gums totally a thing of the past.
