Wisdom tooth being removed today. How was yours?

I'm quite nervous. Pain doesn't worry me but I'm worried it'll be a waste of time

My usual dentist couldn't do it. So I was referred to another dental surgery who has a dental surgeon. He/she will be removing it

Problem is, my dentist couldn't remove it because when I open my jaw the widest it goes, you can't really get to it/see it (his words)

The x ray to see where it was took 4 attempts before they finally pushed it back enough to get a clear shot (the x ray bloody hurt!)

I'm so worried they'll do the incision and then decide actually they can't help me Sad

Following as this might be my issue too.

Good luck op.

I had mine out at 18, this was done over two appointments. I have to be honest and say the one where I was given just a local was awful. The second, they sedated me and was much better. Things will have moved on since then as I'm now 51!

I was back at work the best day and I had no swelling after the removal. Talk to the dentist, I'm sure they'll put your mind at rest.

@Howeverdoyouneedme hope it goes okay for you. Mine had erupted fine but it's catching on me cheek!

I assume mine will be just local as the receptionist said I was fine to drive my car Envy

I had mine removed under general at a different dentist to my usual one as they couldn’t do mine . As they were doing all at once it was the way they suggested . Felt fine afterwards and headed off abroad the next day .

I wouldn’t think they would start the process if it was obvious it wasn’t going to work , but if they can’t do it today may be worth asking about having it done under general rather than local . Keeping my fingers crossed for you .

Honestly, mine was so, so easy even though I had been TERRIFIED before! Told the dental surgeon I'd much rather go through labour again. In actual fact, it was not a problem in any way. I had been given the impression it was goi g to be complicated/difficult but the dental surgeon said they'd seen much worse. I am so so glad I got it done and hope you will be too.

Duckduckgooseagain · 26/01/2023 07:41

I had mine done under general at the hospital due to having all of them removed. Ask if that’s the next step if they can’t get them out today. Atleast you then know there is another option

GradNonFashinista · 26/01/2023 07:41

Following as I’m having a back molar out soon which the dentist says is worse to remove than a wisdom tooth! She said I might need a bone graft. I’m having sedation! And I still cry when I think about it

AnekeSchuss · 26/01/2023 07:43

Three of mine were too twisty at the root to remove so they removed just the upper part of the teeth. All three in about 15 mins under local and it was hardly uncomfortable and healed quickly.

In stark contrast to the single tooth several years before that was yanked at for over half an hour by a student at dental hospital and took weeks to heal and traumatised me.

trainer3 · 26/01/2023 07:43

Have had all four out but they were fine as they weren't impacted. Also I have a huge mouth. Good luck today

MissCrowley · 26/01/2023 07:44

I had mine done with local, my roots were twisted and my tooth had erupted at an odd angle.
Hands down it was the easiest because of the brilliant dental surgeon I had.
I since had a molar removed and it was awful. I still get pain in the tooth that no longer exists and shooting jaw pain.
I think you'll be fine with someone who knows what they're doing.

As another example nurses who take blood day in day out can get blood out of me really easily, those who don't have to twist around and call my veins difficult. I think it depends on the expertise, hopefully this time you have an expert!

itswonkylampshade · 26/01/2023 07:46

I had mine out about a month ago after putting it off for two years! It was so quick and easy and the thought turned out to be so much worse than the reality. Good luck and stay calm OP 👍

Peekingovertheparapet · 26/01/2023 07:54

I’ve had two out. Wildly different experiences. One was really trivial, but was an upper wisdom tooth, and in my upper jaw. Total doddle.

the other was more complex, a lower wisdom tooth that was impacted and in the oral surgery department. I won’t lie, it was quite hard going, lots of pressure and took some time. But it came out in the end. I lost a bit of my jaw in the process which was quite painful in recovery but after 10 days or so it was fine. You may be able to work in a couple of days, you may need a week or more.

Ultimately having them removed was positive overall.

TheSatsumaConsumer · 26/01/2023 08:02

I have a small mouth (same problem with x-rays) and have had two wisdom teeth out, one last week. The top one was also growing into my cheek and causing infections. The removal and recovery from both has been less painful than the infections I had, but do rest properly afterwards and follow advice as it does help. Good luck!

Michellebops · 26/01/2023 08:02

So I am TERRIFIED of the dentist due to a bad experience in my teens.

I needed both my top ones out a few years ago, I don't have a wide mouth/bite and they were hurting me.

I was referred to a dental hospital in Glasgow, but it was so easy in comparison to my fears.

Stitches were a but uncomfortable for a few weeks though

TrollMunter · 26/01/2023 08:07

Has my lower one out. I feel like I’ve got ptsd from it. I had dry socket though so the pain was unreal. Also looked like someone had punched me in the face. Couldn’t eat properly for two weeks. I’d do it again though as my wisdom tooth was an infected mess.

babyofme · 26/01/2023 11:56

Had it done! Peace of cake when it was pulled out, it took about 2 minutes or less. I was shocked BUT

I'm still numb from the local yet it isn't the wisdom tooth site I feel pain in Confused it's really painful on my bottom molar under where it was removed! Not even the same area as the tooth that was removed (upper right)
