If you arrived at a holiday home. What would you like to see in the welcome basket?

I currently put in prosecco, crisps, sweets, bits for children.

Local specialities. Ie in Devon, some nice Devon tea etc

Reviving this thread as I'm about to start a holiday let.
So many recommendations for tea and coffee - they will be there anyway (as well as sugar, dishwasher tabs, washing up liquid, paper towels etc etc).
I was thinking milk (would you leave it in the fridge?), and either a nice homemade cake or nice artisan bread with local jam and butter. Anything more and it's getting too pricey! Could put in local biscuits.
As for pantry items, I was thinking (as well as salt and pepper) of olive oil, some basic spices (paprika, Italian herbs with garlic, cumin, coriander....or is that too much and I'm just asking for the stuff to be used and abused?

Oooo a new let, how exciting.

On the milk thing, I'd go for UHT because some people don't use milk (me).

I have just looked back at my last post, I'm not obsessed with milk, honestly.

At least one decent knife so if I'm cooking I can actually chop things.

I think either a list of things if you are eg putting soap in the bathroom, milk in the fridge, or just put a pile of things you see as you open the door.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 21/06/2024 07:18

Please not UHT milk. Grim. That would send us out to buy milk, we wouldn't use it.

Last UK holiday cottage we stayed in provided tea, coffee, milk, scones, some butter and jam, a locally made cake and biscuits. We arrived mid afternoon having done a shop en route so this was perfect.

Hedonism · 21/06/2024 07:39

We stay in self catering properties at least 3-4x per year, I can't remember the last time we had a welcome basket 😢 or even a pint of milk, which I count as a basic (not uht though, that's disgusting).

Cake or biscuits always a winner.

Finallyfreenearly · 21/06/2024 07:42

You could have one long life oat or soya milk too?

i would love you for that alone!!

Sago1 · 21/06/2024 08:03

We have opted to leave a voucher for a fabulous local shop 3 minutes walk from our holiday let.
Guests can buy some nice wine, cheese whatever they want and no food is wasted.
I do leave nice Nespresso pods and a great selection of teas.

MariaVT65 · 21/06/2024 08:11

We’ve found that some places don’t let you check in until fairly late so something for breakfast the next day, like some pastries.

Just go with your instinct though as we’re all different. Someone above said the local paper, but most age groups wouldn’t be bothered about this.

Sago1 · 21/06/2024 08:14

mondaytosunday We only leave tea, coffee sugar etc, I make sure there is always lots of ice in the freezer.
Also dishwasher tablets, fairy, anti bac and plenty of bin liners, dish cloths and kitchen roll, foil and cling film.
I stopped leaving washing tabs and fabric conditioner as people took them!
The items people always seem most grateful for are the folding picnic chairs, blue tooth speaker, hot water bottles and OS map.
I hate a mish mash of coat hangers so buy matching wooden ones, they do disappear unfortunately so I keep a large stock.
Good luck with your holiday let.

I hate nespresso, such a waste of plastic. And I only drink one type of tea that I’ll bring with me.
I think welcome baskets are utterly pointless as you will never satisfy everybody and a lot of stuff will be wasted.

I get really cross when a welcome basket includes things I neither want nor need, but there is insufficient toilet roll or dishwasher tablets for our stay

Tea bags, biscuits, orange juice, milk

This.

Cheeesus · 21/06/2024 09:11

I think not too much as it annoys me when it’s stuff we don’t want! Packet of nice shortbread or equivalent is nice, that’s all I’d want or expect.
Love a cheapish bunch of flowers in a vase though. £6 tulips sort of thing.
