Should I get screened for ADHD?

Hi all,

so, I’ve been thinking about getting screened for a while but feel nervous about doing so! A lot of the symptoms really resonate with me but also don’t know if I‘m being dramatic?! I also think I feel embarrassed because of how popular it is right now.
For reference, I am a 29 year old female. I do understand that it can present differently in women.
Some of the traits I relate to include:

  • Being unable to concentrate - throughout school it was constantly mentioned how I’d be staring out the window all the time, not being able to recall anything that was said that lesson because my focus was so poor(unless it was something I was SUPER interested it). This remains the same in my work life.
  • Can’t concentrate during conversations, end up not even listening to half the conversation. Always accidentally speaking over people and trying to finish their sentences which is frustrating when I notice I’m doing it!
  • fairly impulsive, very poor with money and managing my finances.
  • consistent poor mental health including history of anxiety, depression, anorexia nervosa and PTSD.
  • once I get the motivation for something, I can’t stop to the point of missing meals etc
  • always feeling stressed and overwhelmed, wondering why I can’t just function like everyone else?!

these are just examples! If anyone could share their opinions and/or experiences that would be really welcomed :)

Thankyou!

Sound like excellent reasons to get screened, and embarrassment not a great one to hide away from it.

Take a paper print out of a decent adhd online test to your gp appointment.

Thank you for your response!

Do you happen to know of the best online screening that I can take to my GP? 😊will do a bit of my own searching in the meantime x

This screening tool is good: adhduk.co.uk/adult-adhd-screening-survey/ they also have some good info on that site.

With the symptoms you describe, I do think it would be worth going on the waiting list for screening.

I understand your reticence because ADHD seems "trendy" right now, but if I remember correctly, stats show there are only 200,000 people diagnosed in the UK, and an estimated 2.6 million people actually have it (around 4% or 1 in 25 people). So it's far more common than we realised and it's only now that people are getting the treatment they need.
