Moving to Harrogate

Hi, we are looking to move to Harrogate and really like the Pannal and Burn Bridge area. However, I don’t think this area would be in the catchment for Harrogate Grammar school as it seems you have to be within a mile of the school to get in for the ‘town’ allocation? If so, I was wondering which high school do children attend from these areas and are there some good primary schools in this area as well?

We really like the countryside and would love to be in walking distance of some nice walks. Are there any other areas in Harrogate to consider which tick the good high school and countryside? Or maybe in the rural catchment for Harrogate grammar?

We would really appreciate any advice you may have. Thank you so much in advance! Xxx

Thank you!! Good to know as Ripon has been recommended by a few people to us

we are looking in the same area with exactly the same predicament. Also the primaries are full round that area currently. Ok if you haven’t started school yet but useless if they are.
it’s giving me a huge head ache and stress to find somewhere that works!

How do people get from Burn bridge to St Aidens by public transport?
and what about the area around Asheville school - how do people around this area get their kids to st Aidans?

@MarieInternette and @Just2again , thank you so much for suggesting other villages to look at, it’s super helpful and I appreciate your feedback so much 🙏. I have heard great things about St Aidens too, but I’m afraid we’re not church goers so I don’t think we would qualify :/.

@MTIH thank you for the up-to-date info about the schools. The last time I looked Rossett was down as good on Ofsted but just rechecked and It changed in Nov 2022 so thanks for highlighting that!

@PizzaPizza56 those are great suggestions thank you. We really liked the Oatlands and Mallinsons area when we visited and it looks like it is in the catchment, so maybe that would be perfect if not too far from Pannal anyway. Thank you!

And thank you so much to everyone for your comments. It’s so helpful hearing from people who live there, it’s invaluable xxx

Rossett has recently appointed a new head, who used to be deputy head at Harrogate Grammar. It seems likely that the school will improve. But having said that, there are no truly awful secondaries in Harrogate.

Harrogate Grammar has always had the best reputation - and you can see it reflected in the behaviour of the pupils coming and going to school.

I've also heard good things about Ripon Grammar.

@Frederica145 thank you! I think the Grammar would be our fave if possible. We’re still hoping to find something in the catchment area within budget 🤞, but it’s been a bit quiet recently xx

I think so many people aren’t listing thinking it’s a bad time and to wait. And perhaps because they haven’t found anything they want to move to (because people aren’t listing). Therefore we are all just stuck when if some people actually put their houses on the market not would get things going again. That’s my theory anyway, chicken or egg! We haven’t seen much but have decided we will now put our house on the market which is a bit scary as we are quite happy with it but just want location to change for schools. Primaries are very full, secondaries seem so hard to get into with bb and Pannal being a black spot for the grammar school. So tricky. I feel like we are in the exact same position and must be many more! If you’ve got £1.2m or so you’d have no problem I think.

Jellybeans00 · 10/01/2024 13:10

Haha yes - that amount of money would take a lot of stress away 😂! We do sound in a very similar position. We feel very stuck at the moment. We sold ours early last year but still haven’t found anything, but not sure if we are holding out for the impossible. Hoping more houses might be listed in Feb 🤞

That’s interesting (and disheartening) about the primary schools - how did you find this out?

Sorry, what does ‘bb’ mean 😂? X

I think bb refers to Burn Bridge. Getting from the Ashville area to St Aidans could be done on foot. It’s a walk I would regularly do, however I wouldn’t be carrying all the heavy bags a pupil would be. There are houses for sale near the grammar school, quite a few around the £7-800000 mark but I’ve noticed they’re really sticking. We are within catchment, children flown the nest now but there is a lack of property we would be interested in as our next step. I think the market is pretty stuck and interest rates have scared people off.

What kind of house and what price range are you looking at?
A fair few are still private sales (almost all were when we bought in 2006- you had to know someone to get a house)
