Stupid math/petrol question

WrendaleCountryDogs · 25/01/2023 10:13

My maths is absolutely dreadful.

If I paid £50 for petrol at a cost of 149.9, how more more did I pay than if I paid £50 at 147.9? I know I paid 2p a litre more but I can't work out how many litres I put in. Please don't laugh at what is probably a really really simple sum.

Also whilst I'm at it.
Which is better value. £3.50 for 4 litres of Pepsi or £12 for 48x 330ml cans??

So for the petrol I would round it and say 1.47 and 1.49 a litre
Divide the £50 by both prices
1.47 is 34.01 litres
1.49 is 33.55 litres

To calculate the litres of petrol it's total price paid divided by price per litre.

So
50/1.499 = 33.36 litres
50/1.479 = 33.8 litres

The difference is just under half a litre.

My maths is also shocking so this could be way out!!!

3.50 for 4 litres of Pepsi or £12 for 48x 330ml cans?

So the 4 litres is costing you about 87p a litre (3.50 divided by 4)
48 cans is 15 litres which is 80p a litre
So the cans are better value
With that, always look on the shelf at the price per 100g/ml and use that to work it out

The cans of coke are better value.

SqueakyDinosaur · 25/01/2023 10:24

OK, so first you need to divide the £50 by the cost per litre. 50/1.499 = 33.56 litres.

Then do the same for the lower price: 50/1.479 = 33.8 litres. So you got about a quarter of a litre extra at the lower price.

I will help. The difference is so small, it's not worth the hassle. Unless you're helping with homework?

"Which is better value. £3.50 for 4 litres of Pepsi or £12 for 48x 330ml cans??"

This is valid question. I do my calculations in the supermarket 😂

Calculate price per litre.

£3.50/4=£0.875 (0.88) per litre

48x330ml=15,840ml / 1000 = 15.84l

£12/15.84=£0.75 (0.76) per litre

Cans are cheaper
