Can you get virgin prices down as existing customer?

Currently on Virgin and downgrading package to remove TV and landline I don't use. M125 broadband only cost they've offered is £44/m for 18 months but new customers get the same for £25/m.
Is there any way I can get them to give me the same or similar to a new customer? If not I'm considering moving but loathe to do so with gaming teens in the house, if I can avoid it. The cost is killing me though.

Yes. Tell them you're leaving as you don't feel existing customers are valued given the discrepancy between new and old customer pricings for the same product.

Hapoydayz · 24/01/2023 20:12

Yes, they are one of the best companies for lowering existing customers prices when at end of contract

Justmuddlingalong · 24/01/2023 20:14

Yes. You'll probably get a better deal. But be polite and you'll get further than if you're ratty while negotiating.

BeADinosaur · 24/01/2023 20:16

Yes.

I got an email saying my price was going up to £56. I called and didn't even pretend to leave, I just said "This is lots of money. Please make this less money".

They said ok.

The guy said he could do £24, then realised I didn't actually use my land line so reduced it to £19 a month for 18 months for broadband and some kind of speed boost.

I do coming to end of contract and mine was going from £29.99 to £65 Pp I phoned them and was very very nice to a lovely guy working from home same as me - two children etc and I got it for £24.99 from this month.

so cheaper than before same deal.

I find being very very nice works and being prepared to walk away and having a huge list of the offers.

my rac renewal was £290 and then when I rang they said £570 and I went with aa quote as they weren’t prepared to move. Aa was £240 went with them

asking very nicely usually works, thank them and if no movement ask to talk to a manager saying no fault of them but wondering if a manager would authorise it if requested. Create a connection with the person on the other end of the phone. Etc do you research what other companies offer the same and what do they charge

Thanks - all great advice and just what I needed. Will get back to them by phone, as I used online chat thing today and can't do much by that I guess.

Yes, every year DH negotiates a new deal with them. He says he’s leaving and they have always given us the new deal.

As pp say be polite and know your facts first and be prepared to walk away.

i really need to give them a ring, see what they can do, between them & talk talk it's getting ridiculous.

BluIsTheColor · 05/02/2023 08:55

What virgin phone number do you ring to ask for reduction?

Mrsandor · 05/02/2023 09:12

We were with Virgin for 10 years, every year we'd ring up to get a reduction and then we decided to leave them as they couldn't give us a good enough reduction - we were paying £44 for a landlines and broadband so not even a box! We tried to leave. It took about 4 months to sort out. They kept on billing us the full £44 even though we'd 'left' them. What it boiled down to was someone hadn't ticked the right box on paperwork to switch us off. They were a nightmare to deal with. Which was a shame as we'd been with them for so long. In the end I managed to get through to someone who suspended our payments whilst they investigated and I requested the landline to be cut off. They were very reluctant and made loads of excuses but I stood firm and they did it.

TheWordWomanIsTaken · 05/02/2023 10:08

I was never able to get a reduction - well I did, but because they reduced the package.
Walked away.

Yes, I've done it twice. Near the end of the contract phoned and asked what deal they'd offer for me to stay, otherwise I'd sign up with BT/Sky etc.

Both times they offered a price only slightly above the best new customer deal (£28 ish) which I was happy to accept to avoid the hassle of switching.

However, towards the end of the third contract period, the service had deteriorated so much that I didn't want to stay at any price and now we're with BT on full fibre in the initial discounted contract period. When this comes to the end, I'll do the same as it's equally as fast as Virgin as far as I can tell.

If that's the way their marketing strategy works, you either play them at their own game, or pay a lot more than you need to.
