How many/how much on insurance policies?

For some time I've had the sense that we're spending a lot on insurance policies. In total, our monthly spend on various insurances, including life insurance, critical illness, income protection, house, car & pet insurance is around £340.

Is that crazy? I understand it's a bit of a piece of string question as life/crit illness/income protection is linked to the mortgage. But still I'm wondering what insurance others have? Do we have a lot or is this normal?

If relevant I'm self employed. DH is in public sector.

I pay about £200 pa for car insurance and just under that for house buildings and contents. That's it.

I consider I don't need critical illness, income protection or life cover because I have some life cover and dependents pension through work, plus savings and investments.

DH and I never bothered with personal insirances because we were both able to support ourselves and DC if the worst happened. We also lived well within our means so we have savings and a short term loss of one income would have been manageable.

I've never bought insurance cover for appliances etc, considering that over time, the money I save covers an occasional early replacement.

If you have debts and higher % outgoings, plus more expensive cars etc it's going to be more, but it really depends what cover you have and if you need it.

Just found this post as looking at insurance and self employed.

It says on Bupa website health insurance can be a taxeable expense for self employed.

And it says on the gov.uk site insurances for the business are tax deductable.

But his accountant said a while back he thought health insurance is not. Although DH says he may have asked about dental!

Anyone know about expenses and insurance?

It's not an expense. Oh well.
