Car insurance- other party insurer contacted me

im insured in the uk, had an accident last week reported to my insurer all sorted with them just about.

had the other insurance company on the phone from the other side this morning asking for my version of the events …

am I correct that I’m not legally obligated to provide this and that once reported to my insurer they deal with everything for Me?

the other insurer seemed to not understand why I wouldn’t speak to them and told me to call back once I’d spoke to my insurer

Absolutely don't. Refer them to your insurer. I had this, after someone else hit my car because they were on the wrong side of the road. They probably aren't even the insurance company of the other party, but being paid by then. They are trying to get you to trip yourself up. My insurance company told me this, and told me to say both to them.

Pa the ones who phoned me were trying to sound all chatty and impersonal, using my first name etc.

I thought this! She was just like well speak to them and ring me back, I was like erm I don’t expect I’ll be ringing you back

With insurance, if the other person's insurance company think it's highly likely to be "their" fault (for example, if the other driver drove into the back of you) then sometimes they will contact you and offer to deal with your claim, and leave your insurance company out of it.

That's because they can then mitigate costs as much as possible (if your own insurance company deal with it they have no control over what is spent).

This can be a good thing - it means there's no Excess to pay and claim back, and usually the handling of the claim is no worse. It also keeps your claim record cleaner.

But it's up to you if you'd rather stick with your own insurance company.

However, if there's any doubt about who's to blame, then deal with your own insurance company and leave them to fight the battles and agree liability - that's what they are there for!

This can also be a terrible thing as if they choose the repairer and it isn't done properly then you are screwed.

I've done both in the past. Small repair I dealt directly with the other party's insurer but larger repair I did through my own insurer.

My car was written off and my insurer has already dealt with it and paid me so not really a possibility to let them deal with it and this point. Who knows why they are doing it as my insurer has admitted liability
