How often do you move furniture to clean?

As a bit of background I'm fairly laxidasical in the housework department, everything or so I thought is hygienic but I don't mind a bit of clutter. I wash my meat/chicken, so bleach out sink at least once a day and bathrooms very clean. Hoover downstairs everyday and under sofa cushions, wipe down all work surfaces with bleach spray daily.

I moved a few months ago and got the shock of my life by the amount of dust and dirt behind big items of furniture. Things like wardrobes, large bookshelves, kitchen dressers probably haven't been moved in 10 years and the dust cobwebs actually were fossilised onto the walls 😢. It was an old house so very dusty anyway, but I would have been judging anyone else inwardly if I'd seen it in their house. My kitchen was a very tight space and I have never moved fridge (which was gleaming inside) and I was horrified to find piles of mouse droppings under it 🤢.
I'm going to have to seriously up my game, but was just wondering how often people move these large items to clean?

We move the sofas to clean semi-regularly because DD's toys roll/get accidentally kicked under them so we always recover quite a few when we move them.

The fridge - never.

Anything that I can move by myself gets cleaned under every week (I had to teach myself the mantra never clean around things always under) because I was always similarly shocked 😂 Big items that take two people to move (beds mainly) probably monthly? My fridge / wardrobes are all built in so they're all good.

Cleaning on top of things is weekly too - I always get shocked by the dust on top of things like doorframes, cupboards etc!

Every couple of years when we redecorate. White goods, we clean under them in a panic if they need to be repaired or replaced!

Frozen shoulder, long covid fatigue and live alone, so I can’t move large heavy items at all. The plumber pulled my washing machine forwards recently to check the hose connections, so I was able to poke the hoover nozzle behind it at the time. There was just a little dust, nothing too horrific.

@meetmeatmidnights there was even mouse droppings on the top of the fridge 😩. Will definitely be cleaning up aswell as down from now on.
My only consolation was that we hired a van and moved ourselves. I would have died from shame if removal men saw the state of the place.

@winterpastasalad oh no 😂 😂

It's amazing the never ending list of things that need cleaning!!

I'm sure removal men have seen worse, but I absolutely understand the feeling!!! When we had our bath replaced, they pulled out the old one and it was so dusty and dirty underneath I could have cried. Irrespective of the fact it's impossible to clean under a panelled in bath without physically taking off the panel and re sealing every time 😂

Your dust wouldn't bother me but over use of bleach and washing meat in the sink is totally OTT and unnecessary.

winterpastasalad · 25/01/2023 10:48

@Furrybootstoday I know washing meat/chicken isn't the done thing, but when you see the crap that comes off it you can't not do it.
The dust was absolutely disgusting. It was severe cobwebs that had become very dirty and literally imprinted on the walls.
