Have you ever used a set square?

Just musing...DD asked me for a new protractor today. I enquired as to whether the rest of her geometry set was okay, and she replied that she'd never used the two set squares. She's in Year 11.

Thinking about it, I don't remember using my set squares when I was at school either. I asked DH (maths, further maths A-levels) and he also hadn't!

So...have you ever used a set square? Would you know how to use one? And how many Olympic-sized swimming pools could we fill with all the unused set squares from our DC's geometry sets? 🙂

@SheWoreYellow ah I see! That does look like a pretty rubbish tool!

This is what I think of when I hear the words “set square”. I guess it’s like a protractor, but in a triangle? Weird that different countries have slightly different tools for the same thing!

Frequently used when I was at school, we also used slide rules and log tables.
I am quite old!

Log tables! There's a skill that was absolutely worthless as a life skill beyond 13.

I use one fairly regularly in work.

I work as a textile designer.

Vague memories of possibly using one in technical drawing.

DogInATent · 23/01/2023 21:52

Used them for isometric projections for technical drawing in CDT. Haven't used them much (except as short rulers) in the nearly 40 years since!

I do use small metal engineers squares from time to time for DIY jobs.

Never used one - and I did maths and further maths A Levels.

Yep, in graphics

I use mine all the time for the set angles, I'm working with stained glass and it's brilliant to have a fixed angle that I can just cut without getting the protractor out.

Me too! (Love the username)

I used mine as a ruler when mine had broken or I couldn't be bothered getting it out of my bag (at school). Not used one as an adult.

SerialFaffer · 23/01/2023 22:06

I’ve only used them for design in the past, such as for isometric and axonometric drawings.

I remember being shown how to use one to draw parallell lines, in the 1980s, but only because one of my classmates asked what it was for.
Geometry sets are a waste of money and plastic. Much better to just buy a good quality proteactor and set of compasses.

Thanks everybody. Interesting that your set square is so different, @CrimsonAlligator !
