Pramspreading - anyone noticed it recently?

Recently I have been noticing this phenomenon and was wondering if I am the only one. I call it "Pramspreading" and it's 95% done by men... (totally anecdotally)

When a man, showing off his manly long legs and stride takes his child for a stroll... but because of his manly long legs can't possibly walk behind the pram like a normal person... oh nooooo!

The pram goes on his SIDE, while he holds it with a (manly) hand and on the other hand is usually a coffee or the phone...
So this long legged manly man takes over twice as much space on the pavement because of his side pram... Pramspreading...

Is this a phenomenon local to me?

🙄

No Op. I haven’t noticed this.

Why? Because I don’t spend my life actively seeking out things to be annoyed about. And when I perhaps find one example of something, I extrapolate from it that’s it’s a “thing” a “trend” etc

Sux2buthen · 23/01/2023 09:41

Clearly lighthearted and yes it's a thing for sure Grin

MrsSkylerWhite · 23/01/2023 09:41

Quite.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 23/01/2023 09:43

I’ve certainly seen it around here.

PuttingDownRoots · 23/01/2023 09:44

I thought this was going to be about oversize prams!

I saw that occasionally when mine were young... youngest nearly 10. I presume its so you notice Modern Father multitasking his Important Business while looking after his child.

Yes it is lighthearted, and I have no issue with in in large pavements, but crowded saturday afternoon shopping streets or even malls? no thanks...

Glad someone else has noticed it... even if midly...

And I am perimenopausal... I can post 100s of things that annoy me Grin but i won't... don't worry other people taking life so seriously...

Just needing some light relief today...

I’ve never seen this

msbevvy · 23/01/2023 09:48

I found myself doing this (minus the phone) with a push along shopping trolley the other day. It felt more comfortable as the handle height was too low for me. This might be the case for some of these men.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 23/01/2023 09:48

I have seen this but I have always interpreted it as the man who doesn't really want to be seen with a pram. Pushing it off to the side.

whattodo1975 · 23/01/2023 09:50

The bastards.

CremeEggsForBreakfast · 23/01/2023 09:51

I haven't seen this but if I had I would assume it's because prams are designed for women who have shorter legs.

When my 2yr old used a buggy board I couldn't walk behind the buggy as there was not enough room between the handle and the board for my stride. It was so poorly designed and I had to walk at a very uncomfortable angle at the side despite my arms being too short to hold the handle properly.

Why wouldn't the same be true of a tall man and a standard pushchair? Maybe the handle doesn't actually extend far enough for him?

Why assume that he's showing off or something? It's just reverse sexism.

I understand (hence my joke about long legs) we did get (many moons ago) the Uppababy Vista has it has adjustable height handles...

Adding the buggy board to the mix did cause issues though

Agree - or like they aren't taking it that seriously/they think they are very cool.

madrush · 23/01/2023 09:52

I’m a tall woman and I do this sometimes because if I stand behind a pram I have to hunch over, the handles are usually too low. I don’t know why it feels like my posture is better from the side because the handles are still too low, but my back hurts less this way.

MassiveSalad22 · 23/01/2023 09:53

I’ve done this before! Didn’t realise it would piss people off 😄 are you walking down particularly busy pavements eg high st? It’s pretty annoying to have to take shorter steps behind the pushchair, or keep kicking the pushchair. Don’t feel the need with this current pushchair but running with the nipper360 I did. I’m 5ft5!!

TinyTear · 23/01/2023 09:53

People who do this, do you do it on a super busy pavement?

Anyway, need to start work, so back later... not ignoring anyone...

I’ve encountered this quite a few times! Truly bizarre (and inconsiderate)!

MassiveSalad22 · 23/01/2023 09:54

Oh that was the worst, the buggy board days.

I found it worse on high streets but also before Christmas in the Westfield Mall - HEAVINGly busy and people taking double space with the side prams (that they sometimes don't control as well and nip peoples ankles...

(ok, work)

I used to do this sometimes because the pram made my arms ache so I'd walk alongside for a little rest. Also when I wanted to chat with my forward facing child.

Never on a busy pavement though and only when it was just me.

itsallgonepetetongagain · 23/01/2023 09:55

My husband does this 😂

BrutusMcDogface · 23/01/2023 10:00

This is very definitely a thing, and I remember my mum moaning about it when my now 30-year-old brother was little! (Dear god I feel old now.)

Sirzy · 23/01/2023 10:02

I’m short but with ds old wheelchair I ofren had to do this as it was too narrow to not end up kicking it as I walked. Drove me mad!

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 23/01/2023 10:04

Husband does this because otherwise he has to take tiny little steps which is uncomfortable for him. I don't see why he needs to be in pain and uncomfortable to avoid offending mnetters
