Films to watch with 9yr Dd

What films (or series) have you enjoyed watching together? ideas of classics or recent films appreciated.
Shes fairly easy to please. She’s enjoyed things like Parent Trap and Annie but she’s also desperate to watch Stranger Things and that sort of programme. She likes football. Dying animals are a big no!

Please hit me with any suggestions. Bonus points for a family friendly mystery. Films are not my forte! Thanks!

Young Sherlock Holmes might be something she enjoys. There is death but I don’t think animals die.

Once upon a time is a brilliant series my dd loves it and so do I. Its on disney plus I think. Twilight was ok all 4 films but might be a bit teenagey? Wednesday is terrific on Netflix me and my dd really enjoyed it. The princess Diaries are fab, easy to watch and age appropriate. Encanto was good,we took all our Guides and Brownies to the cinema to see that. Matlida the musical was ok but the origional was better...

creamwitheverything · 22/01/2023 20:25

Oh and you cant go wrong with good old Harry Potter! Peter Rabbit was great too!

wickerhearth · 22/01/2023 20:29

When Marnie was there on Netflix.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 22/01/2023 20:30

Enola Holmes? There's two of them now. Netflix.

His Dark Materials on BBC. Get her started on the books as well - the first one in particular is magical.

Try the Poirot mysteries on ITV Catch Up service. My son absolutely adores them which was a surprise! There's newer films (on Netflix as well I think) made by Kenneth Branagh if she likes them.

FlightDeckBuckarooo · 22/01/2023 20:46

Thank you all for the suggestions. Lots of films/programmes I’d forgotten about and some I’ve not heard of but they look good. Will enjoy checking them out!

Just add magic on prime. Return to Oz on prime Fuller house on Netflix.
The two Maleficent movies were ok for my 9yr old. "The school of good and evil" was excellent and funny in parts but very dark in others, so not sure about that one.

Ihaveawonderfulpartner · 22/01/2023 21:12

I always recommend it on Mumsnet, Disney Holes. Fab film 🍿👍🏻

Humphplumf · 22/01/2023 21:17

Things that are a hit among the children in our school in years 5 and 6 (mostly girls) and not so childish adults can’t enjoy them.
Wednesday
His Dark Materials
Ghosts
mystic (Cbbc iplayer)
Silverlight (CBBC iplayer)
free rein (Netflix)
Enola Holmes
Jumanji (the new one)
Death in Paradise (yes I know, I thought this was odd but lots of them watch it ).
Malory Towers (CBBC iplayer)
Goosebumps
Creeped Out

AliceMcK · 22/01/2023 21:23

Hits for my 8 & 10yo DDs

Enola Holmes
The Golden Compass
His Dark Materials - BBC series
Yes Day
Ghost Busters (both old and new movies)
Princess Diaries 1 & 2
All the Harry Potter & Fantastic Beasts
We like Star Wars in our house, my DDs love the mandalorian, Andora etc..l
Wednesday
Stranger Things - I said they could watch one or 2 episodes of season one thinking it would be too scary, they are on season 3 now and loving it.
My 10yo loved The Hunger Games, she first watched when she was 9yo.

FlightDeckBuckarooo · 23/01/2023 05:53

My list is getting longer and better. Thanks everyone :-) I’ll definitely enjoy watching some of these with her.

We watched Bend it Like Beckham last night which she liked. I don’t think I’d seen it before. It’s so 2000’s (totally unsurprisingly of course, but it felt more dated than some of the other older films we’ve watched together)

DD loved older films like The Truman Show, Big, Bruce Almighty etc.

I'd say 9 was still a bit young for Stranger Things, we put that off until she started High School.

Darkest materials is good but there is quite a lot of peril in it and DD wasn't a fan and we stopped watching. However David Tennant Around the World which was also on BBC she enjoyed and you also have the Jackie Chan version.

You also have the Night at the Museum movies too which are brilliant. Legally Blonde is appropriate too. Wednesday is good.

Id leave the twilight films a while, the first one is fine, the second one the character is very moody and trying to put herself in unsafe situations alot, the third one there's a fair amount of blood at the beginning and the characters are on their honeymoon which although you don't see anything there's a lot of walking around in lingerie - I think older ages would enjoy it more and sometimes if you watch something too early it ruins it.

Surfsenior · 23/01/2023 06:45

We found Millions somewhere and dd loved that.

Elderflower14 · 23/01/2023 06:50

Loch Ness, Three Man And A Baby/Little Lady, Because Of Winn Dixie..
AVOID.... Bridge To Terabitha... 😢 😢 😢 😢 😢 😢

milkysmum · 23/01/2023 06:57

Just add Magic is great. Dd now 13 used to watch that show repeatedly at around 9/10 years. It was one that I was happy to watch with her ( might see if she fancies re watching again actually ).
Also H2O.

How about adventure stuff? Go to ‘Search’ in whatever streaming service you have, select Adventure genre and start browsing; anything you like, add to Watchlist.
I’m partial to Jules Verne type shows about mysterious worlds.
