Car Insurance for 17 year old

DS is sitting his test soon so looking into options for car insurance. He will have access to DH’s car but won’t be driving everyday so probably named driver on DH’s insurance to start with.

Just wondered if anybody has done this recently and what company you used and roughly how much it cost.

Thanks

Completely depends on what car you've got/where you live etc. Phone your insurance company and they will tell you.

When DD1 was 17 we added her to DH's ancient Ford Ka as a named driver on a provisional licence. Then my DF bought her a car on condition that he could be on the insurance. The Meerkat brand offered a range of options which included Admiral. My car was already insured by them so I called to ask if they did a family/group deal. They did, and knocked £120 off the quoted price. Beware though because the price rockets once they pass their tests.

DD is now 23, has the same car although she doesn't drive it a lot as she's away at uni and the car is with us. Her BF has just had to get his own insurance and found that adding DD as a named driver nearly halved the cost as she has 5 years' NCB.

My advice is to play around on the comparison sites. Admiral didn't require us to get a black box, but some insurers do. It's worth a call to see if you can get a family policy.

I found it no cheaper as a named driver for DS and he won't build up a NCB that way. DS didn't want a black box and works FT so could afford a fairly decent Fiesta. His insurance is £2,000 a year!

Yes it looks like being a named driver might not be that much cheaper so maybe best to have his own insurance from the off.

He is still at school so no desperate need for a car but obviously he is excited to start driving as soon as he passes.
