How old is your MacBook?

I've just realised that the one I'm typing on right now is either 13 or 14 years old!
I dug it back out of the cupbaord because my 2 year old Chromebook died on me.
Yes it needs to be plugged in after about 2 hours, but it still WORKS and it's wifi is better than the chromebook even after all these years.

I'm begining to wonder if it will go on forever!

We have two here that are 13yo, won’t run updates now but otherwise work fine!!

LemonSwan · 22/01/2023 00:22

Omg you are me!

Mac can fuck off with most laptops they made in the last decade . Absolute shite from the bin.

The thick chunky oldies though! Built like brick shit houses. In a good way 🤣

My macbook air is 13 yrs old this month. Can no longer update it and I get the spinning colour-wheel a lot, but I can surf and watch YouTube. Biggest issue, really, is that the t and h keys pop off and are difficult to put back.

DS’s started randomly shutting down after 3 years. The cost to fix it is more than it’s worth. 😕

12yo MacBookAir - replaced the battery a couple of times but still going strong.

Boshi · 22/01/2023 04:41

11 year old MacBook, I replaced it with a newer one a few months ago but I still use
old and wonder why I ever bothers to replace it!

Toddlerteaplease · 22/01/2023 04:48

Mine was about 12 years old. Can't switch it on any more. As cat find the charger. My friend gave Nevis old Mac book air that is 10 years old and it works ok.

Lollipopsicle · 22/01/2023 04:51

Mine's 10 years old. Like others here, the battery died a death years ago, and it won't download the latest OS anymore, but I just plug it in and it works as well as it did when I first bought it.

QueenMabs · 22/01/2023 08:43

Mine is 11 years old and i had filled the memory and it had a breakdown!

Cue very nice it man at work fixing it form me With more memory.

It's still works it's slow to open things up but it fine when it's going.

But it started cracking (husband says it shorting I think it's a loose part rattling) and it seriously overheats.

I think it's game over for my MacBook Confused

I didn't think I'd get any replies on this post !
I shall keep mine ticking over for as long as possible.. it's so SOLID and still does all it should . I'm now wondering if I could get it a new hard drive! I gave up updated it years ago and it doesn't seem to make any difference.
We've never had a Windows or Chromebook that has lasted over 3 years so it really was worth the money!

Mine was getting on for 12 years or more and was slowing down and wouldn't take updates and during lockdown I donated it to a charity in my area who refurbished laptops and gave them to schools for pupils that can't afford a laptop to work from home

Unfortunately the newer macs are just as bad.

In my cupboard I have no less than 7 dead MacBooks from the 20tens. Notably latest a very expensive 2018 MacBook Pro (bought in 2019 new from apple) which suffered from flex gate and they refuse to repair even though the 2017 is on a repair programme after a law suit.

That was the last straw. Vowed never to buy a MacBook again.

The Genius Bar called mine “an antique”

sunsoutagain · 22/01/2023 16:30

I did my thesis for an MA on my Mac classic in 1991. I loved it.

DillDanding · 22/01/2023 16:32

My current one is 5 yo. I killed its 2 predecessors by spilling wine on the keyboards.

I’ve literally just had this from the iStore - ‘vintage’, I think they said Grin

It’s a 2014 MacBook Pro and alas the display is kerfluey. But works with a monitor plugged in, so now it’s a desktop not a laptop. Can’t currently afford a replacement so fingers crossed this fix works until I can save up!

tappinginto2023 · 23/01/2023 00:11

I've found my people!

I've got a Mac book pro I think around 2012.
Still going strong - I don't use it much, and its forever nagging me to buy snitch and update and clear memory so I spend most of my time when I'm on it barring those notifications away. But lovely lovely machine. It's travelled the world with me and I wrote my masters dissertation on it so I'll be gutted when it goes into the back of the wardrobe with the other pile of dead laptops.

emptythelitterbox · 23/01/2023 00:12

2005 MacBook air I think. It works fine but HD too small at this point.

Crumpledstilstkin · 23/01/2023 00:14

And I thought mine was old at a mere 7 years 🤣 we just factory reset every year or so when it gets too full.

SpaceRaiders · 23/01/2023 00:22

I bought my MacBook Air when DD1 was 9 months old. She’s 11 now. 😂 I keep meaning to buy a new one but I hear the latest models aren’t as good.

Pedallleur · 23/01/2023 06:47

Depends what you are trying to do. Adobe products need the higher updates of Catalina OS but if you doing email etc you'll get by. We have Macs at work and more and more they want updates. They are controlled more and more by Apple now
