Advice on Passport please, NC with parents

WineOclock2022 · 21/01/2023 20:49

Evening all,

Just after advice please. Trying to fill in my DD's (16) first passport. She's due to go away this year.

In the parent section 4, it mentions if born after 1983, then details of grandparents, DOB, full names, place of birth, marriage ect.

I fall into this category, however, I am NC with both of my now divorced parents. And no way of finding out the relevant information.

Can she still successfully get one? Really do not want her miss out on this wonderful holiday.

Any advice greatly appreciated. Many Thanks xx

If you have a passport number you shouldn't need their details as you are using your proof of British citizenship to pass to her.

dementedpixie · 21/01/2023 20:55

Is it her 1st ever passport?
It's an adult one you'd be doing for her

QforCucumber · 21/01/2023 20:55

As long as you can input your own passport info you don’t need to put any parental details in - I had this exact situation with Ds’s passports

pigsinoodies · 21/01/2023 20:56

Don't they just need the grandparent details if the parents haven't got proof of citizenship? It's been a while since I looked admittedly but my grandparents were all dead when I got my first passport and I didn't even know their details.

Myself and DH do not have passports unfortunately. I had one as a child but now expired. We've always been a UK staycation family :( xx

Just write a covering letter detailing as much information as you can. So parents DOB, place of birth, details of marriage. Basically anything you DO know, and explain why you cannot give anymore. Shouldn't then be a problem, although she might be asked to attend an interview which is nothing to worry about.

Why don't you renew yours then and then you can use your details as proof of her right to be a British citizen.

I didn't have my parents' passport details when I got mine. Admittedly I wasn't a child but I think I just needed my parents' names and DOB.

You've got the firm in front of you and I haven't so feel free to ignore me. I think I misunderstood it for ages and couldn't supply the details though.

Sign up to ancestry, you should be able to find marriage certificates, birth certificates etc on there with a free trial if you build your immediate family tree.

I had to do this for details for my security clearance because both m6 agents are deceased and I'm out of contact with extended family.

FitzChivarly · 21/01/2023 21:07

I think if you renew your passport you’d be able to then get her one based on that.

If you don’t have your old passport you can report it as lost online and then apply for a new one saying the previous one is lost. Then once you’ve received yours, you can apply for DDs?

I‘m not an expert on this but have recently renewed mine, which was an expired child passport and sent it off and got an adult one in my married name and I found the whole process surprisingly easy. My friend also needed to renew from a child to an adult passport but had lost his years ago and it was so easy to report it as lost and get him a new one, so might be worth a try?

Henddraig · 21/01/2023 21:08

Apply for a copy of your birth certificate- your parents full names will be on there.

MsSquiz · 21/01/2023 21:10

I would just put as much information on as possible that you do know. And leave it at that. They will get in touch if they require more.

I was in a similar position (NC with my dad and my DM died before DD was born) so I just included what I did know and left it at that.

That said, both DH and I have valid passports

Hi op, I've just had my first British passport last year and I am NC with my mother and father . I called and they said to pop a letter in explains the situation. Whoever looks through the fork may contact me to ask more but they didn't. I did this and I had no problems at all , I was then given my interview and then a text to say I had passed the interview and my passport was on its way !

You can find your parent’s marriage certificate on the General Registry Office Website, which would have most of the details you need, you can probably get their birth certificates too. You might need to pay a fee so check how much it would be to renew your passport and do whichever is cheapest.

Was also going to suggest the General Register Office. If you know the basic details of your parents' marriage, you could order a certificate here: www.gov.uk/order-copy-birth-death-marriage-certificate

Those suggesting that the OP apply for her own passport - she would need parents information for this too.

I would put as much information as you have like full name, date of birth etc and in the notes section explain you don’t have any further information.

pointythings · 21/01/2023 21:23

I had this with my foster son, we got the relevant information through the GROW website. Had to send in birth certificates for foster son's mother (not a problem, we were in contact) and father (no contact for 10 years) but were able to get these quite easily.

You can get hold of anyone's birth certificate if you have a few basic details about them, they don't even have to be a relative!

She's already had her own passport though.

No she wouldn't need marriage details, etc if she had a child passport in the past. It would be a renewal not a first passport

Okay thank you all for your advice, was quite overwhelmed when going through the form due to being NC.

It stated even though Adult Passport, Section 4 required if: you are applying for your first adult passport.
And that... "If either parent was born on or after 01/01/1983, please give the following details in section 8 of the application form...

Full name, town, country of birth and date of marriage of your grandparents.

I do know some details, will look on ancestry, and also put as much as I can in a covering letter to explain, also do not mind attending an interview, however unsure whether i could renew my passport - had at 12ish and now 35. So unsure whether this could be done.

Thank you all though do appreciate it xx

Yes you can renew your passport even if it was a big gap since you had one.

This gives info about the grandparents details:
