Been getting a lot of spam emails the last few days. Don’t usually open but this I did as it didn’t go straight to my junk box.

should I be concerned??

have got nothing to hide but worried about a potential data breach. I don’t watch sick content!!

They’ve listed an address I haven’t lived in for 9 years!

Yep 100% a scam. Google will show you others having the same message

Christmaspyjamas · 21/01/2023 18:13

It's a very well known blackmail email. Hundreds of thousands have been sent. There is no video. They don't have your contacts.

So you can safely ignore it.

Thank you. I have nothing to hide but I panicked. I’ve seen loads of scam emails but this one threw out especially with the address, albeit an old one. I have had a few different spam emails in my inbox this week - usually they go straight to my junk and I don’t check that often!

100% a scam. Got that one at work, where naturally there isn't anyone around the computers in the wee small hours when they said they'd got the video evidence, but also none of our computers have videos also.

I did enjoy teasing the caretaker that I'd been told his little secret though.

LovedFedAndNoonesDead · 21/01/2023 18:44

I would change all your passwords as it’s likely your email address and previous address have found their way onto the dark net as a result of a cyber attack or data breach. This is identical, word for word (obviously apart from the address - though they gave a very old address of mine) to the time I received the same email. I never paid them and simply blocked the senders email address - nothing has happened since!!

QueenieL1 · 21/01/2023 18:45

Does anyone remember chain mail, this reminds me of it.

QueenieL1 · 21/01/2023 18:47

Chain letters I meant

pigsinoodies · 21/01/2023 18:48

I get at least 3 of these a week to different email addresses. They're nothing to worry about.

I've had some which included a password I've only ever used on one website (closed down about 5 years earlier) which must have been subject to a data breach in the distant past - that's presumably the same sort of mechanism that leads to your old address being used.

Szboox · 21/01/2023 18:52

I have had the same email this afternoon! Word for word the same! With an address I haven’t lived in for 8 and 1/2 years!
I really did worry too ( not that there could be a video lol) , but looked online and found it a scam !

I remember I got ‘hated’ at school because I didn’t forward a chain letter that was being sent around - back in the day before emails were regularly used 😂

I remember being at secondary school and getting an email saying if I didn’t send something onto a certain amount of people, I’d be murdered in my sleep.

I was such a wimp but not easily fooled these days

although, this did throw me out a bit. First time I’ve had a ‘blackmail’ email.

Thank you everyone. I do feel better now. I’ve had so much junk in my emails but this one was new to me!

not that I’ve been looking at sick content or anything but it made me question it I had indeed accessed something without realising.

or I had been filmed through my iPhone or iPad! I don’t regularly use a computer!

id be more concerned if someone had access to my search history - nothing awful or illegal, but me finding all the answers to the strange questions I have in my head 😂

@Usernumber737373726363 I never got one myself, I wasn't very popular but I remember everyone talking about them.

I only got a chain letter once and my mother was adamant that I was not to send it on and as above was ‘hated’ for it for a few days!

I had a similar email. I couldn't help but laugh as I have the most boring life ever, unless they consider preparing accounts pornograhic Grin

QueenAstrid · 21/01/2023 19:03

I got this email this afternoon too, it freaked me out a bit because it came straight to my inbox and had my previous address in it. It’s obviously phishing so I deleted it, but it’s reassuring to know others got it too!

Theunamedcat · 21/01/2023 19:17

I changed my email to something funny so it's less jarring when you get a scam email if tget don't know your actual name so instead of them writing to theunzmed cat they were telling the unsightly carrot they knew they were watching sick content

It is a scam they actually had one of my old passwords from about 15 years ago so they haven't caught up with me yet

thank you. This is what got to me too. Usually everything goes to junk and goes unnoticed. After googling I did decide to forward it to national cyber security’s email address who say they look into every email they get sent!

I did worry myself and questioned myself. So I can only imagine the worry if people are regularly watching adult content and are doing so within their right if it’s legal adult content was to get this email. Perhaps a younger or older person who might not want to speak out over embarrassment.

apparently I have 48 hours to pay up 😂

I had that exact message a couple of years ago. I ignored it and nothing happened.

genome · 21/01/2023 19:23

I got the same one this afternoon too! Obviously the day for scammers 😬 It has my current address in, which is concerning, but we have lived here for many years.

ShirleyHolmes · 21/01/2023 19:33

I received exactly the same email today. Straight to the bin!

ArianahX · 21/01/2023 19:35

I got that one on the day I'd had an operation & was feeling quite vulnerable so it actually upset me which is not like me at all.

But I knew it was a scam as it was firstly obviously aimed at a male (I'm a female); I never watch porn; and it refers to multiple devices: well, I only own a smartphone.

So I deleted and blocked and have heard nothing since.

I've see the exact same one several times but several years ago - this is how long this has been in circulation. Delete and don't think about it again.

Go to
haveibeenpwned.com/
and insert your various email addresses - it will tell you about the various sites that you have supplied your email address to that have had user data hacked - they may have you name, (email obviously) and even your old password - some of my email addresses have been hacked up to 6 times on different sites over the years - fortunately I have never used the same passwords for different sites and switched over to using a password manager (I use bitwarden - it's free and works on windows, ios, android, etc) - it generates long passwords made from random strings of letters, numbers and characters and stores them - I don't know and don't need to know any of my passwords - the password manager handles everything - it's only when some people see how many times their email addresses and passwords have been hacked that they realise that using the same one on several sites is really stupid - they can get a password from a site and then use scripts that will automatically try your email and password combination in various sites - amazon, ebay, etc. The transition to password managers seems such a big step for many people but anyone that isn't using one is seriously underestimating how organised and sophisticated hacking groups are. I can pretty much guarantee that entering your email address into HIBP (link above) will surprise you. LinkedIn had something like 90 million accounts compromised - I had one email address specifically for linkedin (which I now don't use) - that email address was used for nothing else - that's one of the email addresses that received the same scam email you received - I won't be surprised if it's your linkedin account address hack that was used to send you this scam email.

Usernamesarenoteasy · 21/01/2023 19:48

I had tha email today too! For an address I lived at 13 years ago.
Just made me laugh to be honest, then I deleted it.

Usernumber737373726363 · 21/01/2023 20:06

@larkstar thank you, apparently my email has been in 3 dates breaches.

will look into passwords now. I do use varying passwords but some are similar. I am guilty of having the same password for years for things though.

perhaps tomorrow I’ll change some or use the service you mentioned.
