Medikinet XL shortage?

ChittyChittyBoomBoom · 21/01/2023 15:07

My ds has been taking Medikinet XL for 3 years and we’ve never had problems with its availability. However, our usual pharmacy have said that it’s unavailable to them. I’ve checked with two other pharmacies in our town who’ve said the same 😬.

Has anyone had problems?

@OxfordB it’s usual to start off on a low dose and gradually increase it. My ds weighs around 35kg and has 40mg per day. We split his dose as find it doesn’t quite get him to the end of the school day.

I’m an adult but only 5ft 2 and 50KG, I take 70mg Elvanse at 6:30am, lasts till 4pm, I take a top up of Dex at 4pm - I have 20mg but they break very easily into 4 and I usually only take 10mg.

The exception being when I’m on my period and I burn through 70mg Elvanse by 1-2pm and then I’ll take 10mg at 2pm and another 10mg at 5pm.

I’ve heard back from the adhd team and apparently it’s a nationwide shortage but will be resolved next week 🤷🏽‍♀️🤞🏼 .

Lots of meds are running low. Boots said its a supply issue as many are made in Europe

ChittyChittyBoomBoom · 21/02/2023 08:49

So, as predicted, the issue wasn’t sorted in the next week and we can’t get ds’s prescription 😩. I’ve just spoken to his team and she said they’re getting 100s of similar phone calls 😬☹️. There’s one alternative that she’s prescribed but with no guarantee that they’ll be available either.

Fuck.

I too struggled to get dexamphetamine. The pharmacies said they aren't expecting to have it in stock anytime soon. My psychiatrist has now prescribed elvanse (lisdexamphetamine, ie Dex extended release version).

I'd ask your prescribed first to prescribe methyl phenidate (ie the generic version) and if that isn't available then ask for concerta, which is the the extended release version of methyl phenidate.

NightSprinkles · 21/02/2023 09:34

Apologies ignore me. I just saw he's taking extended release anyway. If you can't get any methyl phenidate based medication then the next thing to try is something based on dexamphetamine but start with a small dose as it can take a while to get used to it.

housemaus · 22/02/2023 09:22

This thread reminded me to re-order my prescription and I called round about 15 pharmacies in my area last week and finally found one who were able to order some methylphenidate in from their supplier, so my advice would be to keep trying pharmacies!

I managed to get a prescription for Medikinet XL 20mg today but I’ve started worrying about the future as we have GCSEs in May / June and I don’t know how they’d go without medication. Such a worry. Good luck everyone!

Same problem here last time we needed it I tried every chemist in the area and couldn’t get it. We had an unrelated hospital appointment in London and managed to get the last packet there but the pharmacist said didn’t know if they could get more and he had been chasing for weeks. Thankfully I have a few packs of 10 (he is on 20) so if I can’t get the 20 I can give him 2 10’s to give us a bit more time to hunt them down.

SpacersChoice · 24/02/2023 17:48

It’s taken me 3 weeks to get my Elvanse and Dex. Admittedly I live rural but 11 pharmacies refused to even take my (hand written) script and order it for me to collect later.

I can’t bloody wait until they’re electronic and I can add it to my Pharmacy2U order.

Tinymrscollings · 24/02/2023 18:10

Same here. We’re doing the best we can with 10mg and 5mg generic Methylphenidate whilst we await them coming back into stock.
