Sometimes I think back on past holidays

I plan my perfect bedroom. It isn't part of a house, it's a massive stand alone room in a wooded area with a stream outside. Only I have the key. I have the most comfortable bed in the world and there are always vases of fresh freesias on the windowledges. There's a fridge with my favourite food, a water cooler and air conditioning. I'm happy, safe and relaxed in there.

I have a scenario I go through - I live in a little whitewashed house in Greece, I imagine my day from the moment I wake, making coffee in the kitchen, watering the plants, walking down the steps to the beach, making my lunch etc, all the detail like the sounds of the cicadas, the smell of thyme and warm air, the feel of the sea and the sun. In the evening I'm walking over the hill to the village to meet friends and dance in the square but I never get that far.

Can I ask where your fridge is? 😂

PermanentTemporary · 22/01/2023 21:10

I put myself into my dream job, nurse at a specialist back spot treatment centre. I get my patient to have a long shower, then he sits with his back to me and I start squeezing his spots. I've never finished the job before I'm asleep.

Unfortunately I can only start thinking about this if I don't have anything too awful on my mind from work.

I imagine I’m in a magical hole in a tree with a bed made of leaves, feathers and moss 😄

WTF

I go on old but familiar walks in my head. For example walking from my old childhood home to the railway station. Starting with unlatching the side gate and then remembering each house, what trees were in the gardens, what plants in the flower beds - that sort of thing. I very rarely make it very far down the road before I'm asleep!

I hope you don't mind, but I'm going to steal this.

reddingweddy · 22/01/2023 21:25

I put myself to sleep a bit at a time. I start with a foot, make sure it's relaxed and comfortable and warm, then give it permission to go to sleep. Then the other foot, then gradually work my way up. I sometimes get as high as my shoulders but not often.

RunnyPaint · 22/01/2023 21:32

I plan what I'm going to wear for an event or holiday that is quite a while in the future. It can be about clothes I have in my wardrobe, or unrealistic ones for totally imaginary events 😁

It’s lovely 😊 I imagine I’m really cosy and it’s windy and rainy outside 😄

I do this too.
My other way is to have a very long running fantasy story, but I have to make sure that it’s a credible world. By the time I’ve worked out the rules and regulations that would govern my latest scenario I’m long asleep!

flowerycurtain · 22/01/2023 21:39

I read historical novels at bedtime. So tonight I will be a maid to Elizabeth 1 and imagine what I'd say to her the night she was told she'd be queen.

Last week I was sleeping with Mark Anthony and the next adventure might involve Richard III

BangingOn · 22/01/2023 21:44

I have a few different ways to fall asleep. Firstly, a room by room tour of a house that’s always been my happy place. Secondly, imagining I’m in the bunk bed on my grandparent’s caravan, warm and cosy with rain falling on the roof. Lastly (and randomly), imagining I’m going Horcrux hunting in The Deathly Hallows and making an inventory of everything I’d pack in Hermione’s enchanted bag.

Sex. 🙂

DuchessofSandwich · 22/01/2023 22:07

I'm designing the interior of my campervan. I don't own a campervan.

MerylSqueak · 22/01/2023 22:21

I too have a long running story I revisit and explore different bits of. It's set in another world that I drop into and I play through different scenarios and relationships. It's been going for years now. It's quite repetitive but l love rooting out a new storyline to follow. A lot of it is set in a forest near caves by a river. In real life, this would be really impractical as I'd be plagued with midges but they don't bother me in my fantasy.

sarahc336 · 22/01/2023 22:26

I go through the alphabet and for each letter I have to think of something I've actually seen that day. I don't think I've ever got past the letter e 🤣🤣

Var57 · 22/01/2023 22:44

I like to pick a superpower. It has to be undetectable in real life though, you can't just go about zapping stuff. My favourite, I think is the power of knowledge. I have to ask myself the question to know the answer, I don't just know things. So, sometimes its missing people and how I would go about letting their loved ones know where to find them, or maybe just the answers to conspiracy theories or murders, etc.

GreenLeavesRustling · 22/01/2023 22:50

I listen to nothing much happens every night. Works an absolute treat for me.

the cosy bed in a tree sounds nice though too!

mrsmacmc · 22/01/2023 22:53

I focus on the word 'the' while tensing and relaxing muscles from my toes up

beepbeepme · 22/01/2023 22:53

I either count backwards from 999, or think of girl's manners etc for each letter of the alphabet or I plan what I'd do with a lottery win.

QueenofLouisiana · 22/01/2023 22:57

I listen to podcasts. I like Newscast, history and true crime. Anything to silence my internal monologue. I believe some people don’t have one and I wonder if they find sleeping easier?

thatparentandthatchild · 22/01/2023 22:59

I have a really long-running fictional scenario- probably been going about 10 years now. Each night I think of a different aspect connected to the scenario and drift off like that. All it is is me imagining myself doing something completely different than I am doing now.

Take going on safari for example. One night I might think about the accommodation, another night it might be the food or who else is with me. I like to think about what it would look like if I was actually there.

alongtimeagoandfaraway · 22/01/2023 23:07

I do 5,4,3,2,1 - I think about:

5 things I could see (as it’s dark I can’t actually see them so I think of things I have seen, usually on a theme like 5 beaches, 5 lighthouses, 5 trees),

4 things I feel (my head on the pillow, my leg against the mattress and duvet…),

3 things I hear (a car in the steet, my husband breathing),

2 things I can small and one I can taste.
The last 2 are a bit more difficult but I’m usually asleep by then so it doesn’t matter.

More recently I’ve been running through a dance routine I’m learning - that works too.

I have this entire make believe life and I think about new scenarios that happen in it.

I do too, for decades! Glad I'm not the only one!
