How much clothes space do you have?

Weve just moved into a loft conversion bedroom and now need wardrobes etc. Our stuff has been all spread about for ages so I don't know what we need any more.

How much do you have?

I'm wondering about a triple wardrobe for me and a double for him. Is that a lot or a little dyt?

I have 1 built in wardrobe and 4 drawers and it never seems enough!

1m wide wardrobe, 4 wide drawers, 4 narrow drawers and space under the bed for extra shoes, handbags etc. Coats all kept downstairs. I'd like more hanging soace but our room is very small.

I have two large chest of drawers and two triple wardrobes and cupboard space to house my ever growing Vinted obsession.

I live on my own so I can indulge without complaint!

DH also has a 1m wide wardrobe but because he only needs half the height his has three drawers built in, he also has 2 narrow drawers.

One small wardrobe between two of us and a small chest of drawers each.

It's all relative isn't it, different lifestyles or styles in general (minimalist vs maximalist etc)

I switched to a capsule wardrobe a few years ago after moving house and thinking a) I have so much stuff here and it feels obscene, I don't wear most of it and b) Do I then really want to pay hundreds of pounds for furniture just to effectively house those things.

I have a small single clothes rail with what I'm currently wearing on it in my bedroom, probably about 70cm long at the most and then one small chest of drawers which houses everything else and out of season bits so - Pyjamas, underwear and socks, little vest tops to put under things and then a few folded up summer clothes and jeans for when the weather warms up. There's ample room to spare in both.

DP has single built in cupboard that he uses in the spare room and keeps everything in that and there's another one the other side that houses things like wet weather coats, wellies, a couple of pairs of shoes each in boxes and I have a small lidded box in there with a couple of hats/gloves/scarves in. Things that get minimal use but that there is no point giving away as they'd have to be repurchased at some point.

I would get rid of things before I ever bought furniture to accommodate it, I love having a clear out!

DH and I each have 2x 1m wardrobe and 1x50cm wardrobe. In my case the 2x1m are divided into hanging and drawers and the 50cm is all hanging for long stuff. This includes our shoes, dressy clothes, out of season, holiday clothes, accessories, my wedding dress (!) etc, nothing is stored anywhere else except a few daily jackets and shoes which are downstairs. I could probably manage with less if I had a good clear out.

It seems to be an odd way of looking at it.

How much space do you have ?

Once you have measured up the space you have, you then look for the best storage solutions to fit in to your space. Presumably in a loft conversion you will have to take height into account ?

So some people will keep things like coats in their wardrobes, others will have a big space downstairs for all those.
Some people will need to store things like bedding, or maybe towels with their clothes, others might have a storage area elsewhere.
Some will have a tiny space in their bedroom and maybe even keep some things in their loft and rotate clothes.
Some people like to hang on to things they won't ever wear again for sentimental reasons, others are far more ruthless, and most of us probably somewhere in between.

Two small double wardrobes. Three cupboards with eight wide shelves in total. One small chest of drawers.

theatrical · 21/01/2023 03:14

Coats and some shoes are downstairs. Other shoes are in boxes in an upstairs cupboard.

GeneandFred · 21/01/2023 03:16

3 double wardrobes and 2 chest of drawers for me. It's not enough. My husband has 1 double wardrobe and a chest of drawers, just enough for him.

LoftyHeights · 21/01/2023 03:23

A large chest of drawers each and a wardrobe between us, most of what we wear doesn't need to hang up.

demotedreally · 21/01/2023 07:00

Thanks interesting. A real Variety.

I don't think it is a particularly odd way of looking at it. Stuff expands to fit the space available. I don't want to under specify and need more, but I don't want to fi our room with bulky furniture for no reason.

Space is not really the concern.

I’ve got 4x 1m wide PAX wardrobes, but I turned a bedroom into a dressing room so I could have a dressing table in there as well. Great for using my hairdryer when my boyfriend is still asleep!

Spendonsend · 21/01/2023 07:22

You need more than me. We have a double and a single and I find it quite tight. We have 3 drawers each which I also find tight. I do have a lot of jumpers as i feel the cold which might be why it feels not enough.
