Been addicted since lockdown.

Idly scrolling for hours.

Yesterday I saw the most horrific tiktok. I didn't click what I was listening to till it was too late. Tiktok almost puts me in a zombie state of scrolling but it was a self identified sado maschicist(sp?) SO describing the most horrific attack on a 9 year old boy.

I actually froze. And listened way longer than I wanted to and now I can't get it out of my head. It was utterly, utterly heartbreaking. I can't describe how upsetting it was and now I just keep crying.

It's not the first time stuff like this has happened and I just wnat to get off there. I've had horrific things pop up before so randomly.

I've uninstalled it and as fun as the 'funparts' are it's just not worth it.

I keep going to click on the app out of habit! I'm cleaning to distract myself (and MNing obviously)

It's based on an algorithm, so say if you like horses you search for horses, see a horse video, like it, comment, then it will generate more horse videos.

But it's based on engagement so also if it shows you something you don't like and you click the comments and like the quotes of 'this is awful!' it takes that as engagement so may throw similar your way.

You can click 'I don't like that' sort of button but if it's something that horrific I shut the app immediately in reaction before I could even think about that.

I can't help thinking the nasty stuff is deliberate, and possibly actually filmed for TikTok.

I’ve had the same OP.

Im starting lifting weights at the moment and so I look on there for correct form etc. Videos are quicker than YouTube and also you can favourite the videos for quick reference in the gym. Perfect I thought!

Some suggestions are relevant. For example you like gum videos, it sends you healthy eating videos. Makes sense.

But then some stuff that pops up is so left field. Child abuse “true crime” stuff has randomly appeared before. The few seconds that I watched I did not want to see (I reported). And then there have been a couple of binge eating ones too.

I can see how that would be so triggering for someone dealing with those issues.

And it tells me kids could be looking for songs, dances, innocent things and get things they don’t want to see.

Blimey OP. My TikTok is all cats, horses, equestrians, female motorcyclists, airfryer recipes, keto, @ndrew t@te haters, menopausal females, feminists (the old fashioned type) pimple popping, hacks on how to fix the knackered trigger on a dyson stick hoover, and long haired men with dad bods. Ahem.

No idea why the algorithm would suggest monkeywanking and vagina puppets. Ive never seen anything like that.

I think DD14 has it. I'm going to tell her to delete it

You “think”? You should know exactly what your child has installed in their phone and what they are viewing. Jesus OP, get a grip.

Mine has never shown anything other than videos related to things that I follow!

I take it you reported it before leaving?

Yes, same one. With the plastic bag? :(

I just can't risk my mental health anymore. I had another one a while ago with the sounds of kids screaming help us, that were apparently being transported by traffickers, in underground tunnels.

I can't bear to think about things like that. It messes me up for weeks

Yes that’s the one. Absolutely horrific. Worst thing I have ever heard in my life and I watch all the true crime/murder youtube stuff.
This was on another level. The calm way he relaying it and almost reliving it chilled me to the bone. I think there were 4 parts to it. I clicked on part one. Don’t know how anyone could go further. There was a warning on it but Jesus Wept it was stomach churning and it will never leave my head.
I do like TikTok, I lose hours watching skincare for mature skin, how to deal with unruly teenagers or funny stuff but I am seriously thinking of deleting it now. That video fucked me up and I also spend WAY too long on it! What an unreal amount of time wasted with shite.

ohdearydearieme · 20/01/2023 20:48

I do follow true crime snd missing people stuff so I am sure that is why it came up for me.

ohdearydearieme · 20/01/2023 20:52

Also it was taken from s tv show where a predator spoke about his crimes so it would gave been shown on that first before it went on Tik Tok. It wasn’t made for Tik Tok I mean. It is old footage.

Lepea · 20/01/2023 20:54

Hmm, I have had a few true crime things lately so is probably to do with that then. Nothing has ever been that upsetting /graphic.

From memory it's usually missing people or more spooky things. Like unsolved mysteries which is a follow on from the UFO stuff I like
