OMG a cold sore in my nose - what helps ?

My entire left nostril inside is covered in a cold sore - I can see it up the inside and it’s huge. It’s actually coming out around the end of my nose like a revolting blistering cornflake ☹️

I get that it’s not life threatening etc, but it’s throbbing, itching, painful, making my teeth and face hurt. GP’s not interested, said unless I get 10 cold sores a year they wouldn’t give me acliclovir tablets, and I should just use Zovirax. It’s doing nothing. Pharmacist said Zovirax is all they can suggest without prescription. So dead end there.

Please can anyone tell me do they have a miracle cure to stop me ripping my own nose off?

If you get the really severe cold sores inside your nose etc. I'm afraid zovirax doesn't touch it.

Have a look at "WiseWays Herbals: Salves for Natural Skin Care, Lemon Balm Cream 2 oz" on Amazon. It's the only thing that's worked for me.

A cold spoon from the freezer on it.
Tea tree oil.
Zovirax for next time.
Pain killers if you need them!

Empathy!

I get cold sores in my nose. It's sooo painful, isn't it?

You can get some antivirals from an online pharmacy. They don't require you to be having a certain number of outbreaks a year, you just have to answer a few basic questions.

gillsareforfish · 21/01/2023 12:09

L-Lysine tablets and you can get a lip balm that contains it as well.
I know a lot of people recommend drying them out with nail varnish remover etc but over the years I've personally found it less painful to keep the cold sore moisturised. I use a cotton bud to apply the l-lysine balm so as to not contaminate the tub.

Lilliflip · 21/01/2023 15:29

Thanks again everyone, just a question about l-lysine. Is this something you take everyday or just when you feel one coming on? I’m thinking I’ll try this and order some acliclovir tabs online.
I’m still continuing with the Zovirax although I think the pain & throbbing peaked yesterday. It’s now drying out, but it’s the biggest one I’ve ever had and looks like there’s something crawling out of my nostril 😞. At the risk of sounding like an absolute drama Queen It actually made me feel quite ill yesterday!

I don't take l lysine everyday. As soon as I feel a tingle like one is on its way I take 2 tablets in the morning and 2 in the evening. It literally stops it from forming into anything. :)

Reading with interest. I have a coldsore in my nose and a boil in my ear at the moment. I'm a really attractive catch right now 🙄

mackthepony · 21/01/2023 21:04

Hope you're feeling better. I had this and it was like a massive piece of crusty snot in my nose

I saw this thread at the weekend and it just made me realise that's what has been going on in my nose for weeks!

Valtrex tablets work fast and well, but they are only available on prescription. You might be able to get hold of some online, but the side effects can be significant.

Our GP worked for a year or two in Australia. When he saw my huge cold sore he said that Valtrex is frequently and routinely prescribed there, but UK GPs are reluctant to prescribe simply because it is expensive. He then said it was perfectly reasonable for me to have it.

He was often good like that, sadly he has retired.

Get a private prescription online for aciclovir tablets.

Nail varnish on a cotton bud, controversial but it's the only thing that works on my cold sores!

I'm going to try this as I usually use hand sanitizer it usually just gets it off in a day

FiftyNotNifty · 23/01/2023 19:35

Be very careful with creams other than coldsore creams. I get them in my nose too, and the first time I didn't know what it was. Tried sudocreme etc. The virus seemed to spread in the cream and the damn thing just got bigger and bigger! I was rubbing cream all round it and it just grew and grew.
Now I am wise to the bastards. First tingle get a compeed plaster on it. If I don't have them in I go into a wild panic. The clear boots cold sore liquid on a cotton bud helps.
But the key is nipping them in the bud and containing any spread.
I get them at the tail end of each and every frigging virus that I get, like clockwork.

I once had a snotty pharmacist tell me that cold sores don’t grow anywhere other than on lips, and as such he was unwilling to assist me in purchasing something to help alleviate the agony. Twat.

Hopefully it goes soon, as the nostril ones are a special kind of cold sore hell.

My doctor told me you couldn't get them in your mouth, backed down when the dentist confirmed it. Cold sores are herpes, you can get them just about anywhere.

Heroes does seem to be very misunderstood @ancientgran.

I once had one on my tongue that was roughly the size of a 5p piece at its largest. You can probably imagine how run down I was to fester that beast for the three months or so that it was in residence. It took me a long time to realise it was a cold sore too. I was convinced my tongue was just going to be taken over by the ulceration, and was quite prepared to chop it out with a spoon! Confused
