Funeral reading

My mum recently passed away very suddenly at the age of 59. I would like to read a poem or some sort of reading at her funeral, but haven't really seen anything that seems fitting. She wasn't overly sentimental and would find some of the stuff that comes up to be a bit too sentimental. Being a mum was a big part of her, and she would have done anything for us, but it also obviously wasn't her whole identity. She was really intelligent, funny, caring and very strong willed. Something that is kind of a tribute to a strong woman might be fitting, maybe with references to being a mother, maybe not? Was just wondering if anyone has seen anything that sounds like it might fit as I'm struggling.

I can’t help you with your reading but I wanted to say I am very sorry for your loss. Be kind to yourself x

So sorry for your loss @Hakunamatata91

You've written the bones of a good poem there already. Can you take your words and expand on them?

Perhaps you're struggling to find anything because she was very much a one-off? No-one can sum her up better than you can, to get the right "feel" across.

What you’ve put in your post sounds perfect- you could include a bit of her earlier life history. Have family/friends any anecdotes or what she meant to them? Sorry for your loss 💐

Thank you all - think I may take the suggestion of trying to write something myself!

When my dad died my brother & I wrote a piece between us saying something about his life, his work & his hobbies, we included bits like him dropping my brother under floors when he was helping him rewire a house, things about his love of cars & how he met mum. My brother did the eulogy from that, it was about 5 minutes long

Hi OP, very sorry to read about your mum.

I agree it would be good to write something yourself but if you’re still considering a poem maybe Phenomenal Woman by Maya Angelou?

Phenomenal Woman

Her poetry is not sentimental and is pretty accessible. This one’s a celebration of physicality so you may think not appropriate for funeral but it could work. You will know if it resonates or not.
