Where in Manchester?!

Hello

I'm moving back to UK later this year with DH and DS (4.5), to Manchester.

I know South Manchester quite well, spent a few years there around Withington/ Chorlton way. Any advice for a small family?! Ideally I would.like to be close ish to nature. Would rent at first, 1500£ PCM (max) , 3 bed. (We WFH so need some space).

I love Chorlton, but I think I want somewhere with a bit more green, I don't mind a little further out if necessary. I feel Chorlton is quite gentrified and pricey so I wouldn't mind seeing if anyone has any advice on something similar or a bit more up and coming ! Manchester is a big place after all.

Looking forward.to your ideas thank you !!! X

Have a look at Marple. Easy access to nature and popular with quite a few people moving out from Chorlton / Didsbury. Not cheap though. Failing that, Romiley and Broadbottom also worth looking at. All have train access to Manchester.

Brilliant thank you, will certainly check those out 🤗

Altrincham/Timperley/Sale. Tram straight to city centre and not too far from Dunham Massey & Tatton Park.

I did consider Sale! But I just need to do research and whittle it down.

I can see the appeal of Glossop way but its a little too far out. Tram would be excellent.

Definitely want to be within city range to enjoy the delights of city living again! I'm fully mountains rural atm and I'm very isolated.

Glossop to Manchester train takes 32 minutes, and loads do this commute, including me twice a month. It's a thriving little town with a good high street. I've been here 17 years and love it. Lots of rental houses within your budget.

I love Didsbury and don’t think anywhere compares but it’s definitely ‘gentrified’ and not really up and coming. Same for Altrincham.

So on that basis I’d suggest Sale (on the tram line, town centre still a bit meh but loads of new bars and restaurants). Has amazing schools.

Urmston - similar feel to sale but a bit less accessible to the rest of south Manchester

Levenshulme - definitely ‘up and coming’ with lots of people moving there, personally I find it a bit gritty still.

Heaton Moor / Heaton Mersey - lovely, leafy, well connected.

Prestwich - always suggested as the ‘Didsbury of the North’. Personally I don’t like the town centre or the main road running though it. A few bars don’t make a Didsbury. But lots of people I know live there and love it! Also close to Heaton Park.

Oh also Cheadle hulme! A bit further out but the train is great, feels leafy but not pretentious and also has great schools. Well connected to Cheshire as well for days out etc.

Given you want to be near the city, I'd probably suggest Didsbury. Close enough to feel like you're "in" Manchester but not in amongst all the students in Rusholme/Fallowfield/Hulme.

Just to say with a 4.5yr old, have you considered schools? The closing date for primary school admissions was 15 January so unless you have already applied / have special dispensation, you need to think about that asap.

Hobbesmanc · 01/02/2023 16:30

Didsbury is so over priced and the schools are mixed to be fair. But it's a great place for cafe and bar culture. There's green space around the river and a few suburban parks but you'll never have them to yourself

Next stop down on the airport to Piccadilly train is less fashionable Gatley and Heald green/Handforth.

Check for airport noise in the latter two. Your budget would get you a decent three bed semi in Gatley with access yo great primaries and an community village feel

Stalybridge. Train straight to Piccadilly or Victoria. It’s a nice little market town with some nice schools

I found you a house too 😂😂

I live in Bramhall (next to Cheadle Hulme which someone else suggested). I love it here as it's got green areas but so easy to get to the peak District!
