Question for landlords about pets

Would or do you allow your tenants to keep chickens?

If so how many would you limit it to?

If not, what would be the reason?

My landlord lets us have chickens but curious to know if this is common for tenants, as so many people started to keep chickens during and beyond lockdown.

Surely that depends on space? We wouldn't allow chickens as the garden isn't suitable.

A rural property with a massive garden would be different.

No because our rental is a 1 bed flat with no garden.

If we owned and rented out a house then probably yes. Though would need to understand if noisy chickens might annoy neighbours (genuinely don’t know this).

I'd be fine with chickens in our rental - as long as the garden was put back together afterwards, they tend to obliterate grass! But not everywhere will be suitable.

I'd prefer chickens to a cat or a puppy tbh.

PeppermintChoc · 19/01/2023 16:29

I would but I am really relaxed about pets generally.

Vinvertebrate · 19/01/2023 16:29

No cockerels though - they are too noisy.

Possibly, but I would check with neighbours first as gardens not big. Would also restrict numbers to 2 or 3 only. Where I live now, my neighbours on both sides have hens, but bigger more secure gardens.

I love hearing all the delighted clucking when an egg has been laid!

I allow cats and dogs, but have never been asked about chickens. If the property was rural I suppose yes, if urban though with a small garden, probably not.

I allow pets in mine. It’s a small 2 bed, small garden. I allow 2 cats or 2 very small/1 med dog, small furries etc. I wouldn’t let someone have 3 large dogs for example though as the house is too small but it would be ok for 2 toy breeds.

I have hens myself but the garden at my rental is too small. I’d be happy with rabbits etc though.

Hens are tricky, although not as bad as ducks. I have pekin bantams which are great in gardens as don’t damage the grass. But hybrid hens will trash a small space. Not all hens are equally garden friendly.

A couple of hens kept in a secure, movable pen, something like an Omlet, would be fine as long as the area was returned to what it was afterwards. You don't need a huge area, 2 square meters for 2 hens is fine. You also have to make sure their feed is kept secure in a metal bin.

Some houses have covenants in place which bar you from keeping livestock, this applies to homeowners so would to tenants too.
