Meat free Edinburgh city.

Apparently Edinburgh are taking meat off the menu for schools, hospitals and nursing homes.
They are moving to plant based meals to help the environment.
Personally I wouldn’t be bothered if I lived in Edinburgh but I can imagine elderly people may want to eat meat and probably need the iron. As it’s their home surely they should have a say.

What does everyone think?

Great news for anyone starting up a bacon sandwich smuggling ring.

Have you got a link? I live in Edinburgh and have children at school here - haven't heard about this.

Tricolette · 19/01/2023 13:47

It’s on euro news.

That's not what that news story actually says though. It's a bit fuzzy round the edges, but I can't see anything that pledges to take meat off the menu completely in city run facilities.

Tricolette · 19/01/2023 13:49

I don’t know much about euro news.
I assume they’re not making it up.

What it actually says is
"The treaty could eventually see the council introduce some carbon labelling on menus and transition to more plant based meals in schools and council buildings"

Fair enough.
Theres usually more to these stories.

If it's true I don't think it's fair to inflict this on care home residents. I can't imagine many people over 80 would be happy having no meat in their diet. From a health point of view it's not great to be completely removing an entire food group, care home residents don't have the opportunity to consume food anywhere else.

Magenta82 · 19/01/2023 14:10

Meat free is one thing, but what are they replacing it with? Protein from dairy, nuts, beans, pulses etc can be tasty and healthy. But these awful meat replacement fake food products are full of crap that I wouldn't want being fed to my kids.

I eat meat, but don't think it needs to be served at every meal.

Such a hilarious first world problem. "Old people need iron" 😂 because there are literally no other reliable sources of iron are there...

Picklypickles · 19/01/2023 14:20

Old people can't eat meat anyway, they've got no teeth left to chew it with!

BarbaraofSeville · 19/01/2023 14:48

A lot of older people will remember a time when they only ate meat a couple of times a week anyway. It's relatively recently that people started eating meat so often.

If it's for environmental reasons they could cut out beef completely and serve other meat like pork and chicken once a week each. Plus use as little dairy as possible.

kitsuneghost · 19/01/2023 14:52

Are they banning pets and 4x4s too if they care about the environment

If you don't know about the sources you read don't share it.

Well meat or eggs once a week is the most reliable way of ensuring iron in a diet.
However is doesn't need to be everyday.

@BamBamBilla I tried to chk them out but there wasn't much information.
