Is it worth paying for a subscription?

I want to pick up a bit of the language by the time I go on holiday in August. I don't expect to be able to have detailed conversations, but to be able to ask for and understand directions, read a menu, order food, pass the time of day politely etc. normal tourist stuff.

I've been using the free version for a couple of weeks and am enjoying it. The ads don't bother me too much. They provide a convenient screen break for my eyes.

Is the paid-for version worthwhile?

If someone ever wants a conversation with me in Welsh about the supply and demand of parsnips (mostly by Owen) and where to buy them (behind the nightclub, in Antarctica, at a protest) I’ll be fluent then but everyday conversation, nope.

I currently have the family subscription free trial and am definitely keeping it. Well worth it imho.

I enjoyed Duolingo but it was too frivolous for me. I wanted to learn sentences I would actually instead of "that big brown bear is beautiful"

I'm tempted to get the family subscription though as DS would love it.

I did the free version for over a year before upgrading when they had it on offer at Christmas. It worked out at less than a pound a week and saves me watching adverts.
I don't think I'd go back to the free version. But I don't think it will make me fluent either but it's a bit of fun just understanding the language.

I love doing Duolingo and think the paid version is worth its weight so that you don’t have to sit through adverts which I can never be bothered to do. I do find it frustrating though as often I’ll use a bit of context to try and translate something if i don’t know what one of the words is. But when they’re asking me to translate ‘Juan is my friend, he works in the hospital. He is a big important dog’ I can get confused somewhat 😳😂

I thought this. There is a cat who has a life Id love. But then i thought it was probably a way to stop people guessing the answer.

I'm 2.5 years into Spanish and finally got the paid version at Christmas when it was half price. I much prefer it, my progress has speeded up, I'm remembering a lot more and I can make mistakes without getting frustrated. I'm on level 81 now. It's also a much better app than it was two years ago in terms of structure and progression, and the content is much more relevant. The speech to text feature is useful, apart from the time I was translating from Spanish to English and my spoken 'I run in a very big park' was replaced with 'I wanna very big cock' Blush
