Question for morning people

Hollyhocky · 19/01/2023 06:34

For you larks, morning people, people who naturally have no problem getting up around sunrise and not 5 minutes before you really have to get up and can't get away with it any longer.:

When your alarm goes off, what goes through your mind? My automatic thought is snooze it. I wish I could just jump up and get on with my day and would like to make some changes to see if I can be more lark/like.

So how do you do it?

Straight into the shower and dress somewhere other than the bedroom so you don’t lie back down!

I get up at 5 to go to the gym but my first thought is usually ‘fuck my life’.

Vebrithien · 19/01/2023 06:41

Usually have a list of things that I need to get done before school/work. Time is precious, need to make the most of it.

But, early morning isn't as nice in the winter.

Sids81 · 19/01/2023 06:44

I lay there for 5 minutes cursing before I "jump" out of bed. I'm up early to get everything and everyone ready for work and child minders. It's the thought of things that need to be done that does it for me.

So I am naturally a morning person, at the weekend I'm up at 7 with a big smile to relax with a coffee but during the week I do curse with it.

VastQuantities · 19/01/2023 06:44

I used to be much better in the mornings but now I don't sleep well it's more difficult to get up.... But I do it.
At this time of year, I make sure the house is warm, so the heating is set to come on an hour before the alarm goes off. When my alarm goes off, I NEVER snooze. I put my bedside lamp on.
Then is the danger period.
i need to haul myself up at this point! Not let my eyes close again.
Knowing that there is no snooze and years of being the only adult in the house has trained me- there is no one else and if I don't get up then the kids would run late/miss school.
I get out of bed but only to make myself a coffee and bring it back to my nice warm bed. By which time, I am awake but can enjoy 15-20 mins in a nice warm bed, with a coffee- until I have to get the DCs up.
Which is now!!! byeeeeeeeee!

When my alarm goes off, I get up. Like, immediately. Snooze isn't an option, feet on the floor is the only option.

It only works if I've had enough sleep though! Anything less than 7 hours and it's a struggle. Less of a struggle in the lighter months though!

demotedreally · 19/01/2023 06:45

Go downstairs and make a tea is quite good?

HS1990 · 19/01/2023 06:46

Usually the first thing I think of is (in no particular order)...

  1. What do I have to look forward to today
  2. What do I need to do today

Tbh I am generally awake before my alarm even goes (usually my toddler calling me mummy mummy mummy or my phone)

Also that morning cup of tea is a real incentive and I try and make it as soon as I can

KangarooKenny · 19/01/2023 06:46

My alarm never goes off, I always wake around 6am.

DidyouNO · 19/01/2023 06:47

I don't think about it. If I did I'd lay there not wanting to. Alarm goes of, I turn it off and get up, feed the cats and make a cuppa if it's freezing and I'm not in a rush I'll take the tea back to bed. Life's too short to stay in bed! Smile

BrassMarbles · 19/01/2023 06:48

My alarm goes off at 6am but I usually wake around 5am. The reasons I am a lark are:

Early waking child for 10 years reset my body clock

Menopause. I'll say no more!

echt · 19/01/2023 06:49

I don't have an alarm and never have. I don't know, but guess that a lot of early risers just wake up early and so are, as it were, ready to get up. When I worked, I always had things to do before going in, a lot of my marking was done at 5.00. a.m.

I've been retired a year and still wake up at 5.00.a.m. but can roll over and snooze until 6.30., so yeas, you can change.

constantgarden · 19/01/2023 06:51

Go to bed early. I’m always up before my alarm. Actually I’m jealous of people who can sleep in, I just can’t do it. Having early rising kids reset my body clock permanently. But I feel absolutely fine at 5am!!

echt · 19/01/2023 06:51

I forgot about the morning cup of tea mentioned by others. I love it.

daemonologie · 19/01/2023 06:53

I get breakfast in bed every morning from DH and a nice hot cup of coffee with a cold orange juice. This makes me a morning person.

pictoosh · 19/01/2023 06:53

I get up at 5 to run before work. My first reaction to the alarm going off is 'uuuurrrgghhh'. However, I swing my legs out anyway and put the kettle on for coffee straight away. Then it's kit on and out the door for 5.30. I always always always feel energised by a morning run. I never get home from one and wish I hadn't bothered.
If I left it till after work, given I have a physical and challenging job, I wouldn't bloody go.

Flerken · 19/01/2023 06:54

Like others, I don’t have an alarm, haven’t for years (decades?) I wake up without one, round 5.30/6ish, spend a while waiting for DH to wake up, then one of us gets up to make tea. Then get up and out of bed around 7.

I’d hate to be woken up by an alarm and have to get straight out of bed.

Thighlengthboots · 19/01/2023 06:55

I dont even use an alarm- havent done for years. I naturally wake up around 6am. I sleep well so usually by then I'm well rested and I really enjoy drinking coffee when the house is quiet and calm and peaceful and noone else is up. Therefore, I am looking forward to getting out of bed and having some peaceful meditative time. So, to answer your question- getting up doesnt feel like a chore, it feels like a prelude to something I actually enjoy.

Flerken · 19/01/2023 06:57

I’ll add - naturally waking up when the sun rises sucks in the middle of summer when it is light at 4am.

TheLastDreamOfTheOak · 19/01/2023 06:59

I've had to start physically putting my phone and kindle in another room. Otherwise despite waking up very early (always have),I would waste so much time scrolling or reading and manage to make myself late.

In summer I can happily get up and potter and clean up a bit and chat to the dogs and cat in the kitchen before everyone else gets up. In winter it's much more difficult.

Sammysquiz · 19/01/2023 07:00

Don’t think! I‘m not a morning person either but need to get up and going for kids/work, so as soon as alarm goes off I get straight up. No snoozing, no thinking ‘ooh shall I just lie here for 2 more mins’ just straight up firefighter-style!!

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 19/01/2023 07:01

I normally ease myself into the day by passing about on my phone for a few minutes......like I'm doing just now!
I don't think being a morning person is necessrily about getting up easily. I still feel fuzzy and tired as I'm in the process of waking up.
It's more that once I'm awake I'm at my best from about 7.30 to 1pm. And I start to flag from 3pm onwards.
In the late afternoon, I probably feel how other people feel in the mornings!
The usual advice to prepare clothes and bags the night before would be a nightmare for me as I'm knackered and useless by then but fine to do it first thing the next day.

LoveCillian · 19/01/2023 07:01

99% of the time I wake up about 10 minutes before the alarm goes off and I get up immediately
I have a bit of a routine in the morning,so I like to get up and get on with it to make sure there’s a smooth transition to getting out to work

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 19/01/2023 07:01

pissing about

CharlotteSometimes1 · 19/01/2023 07:08

i Trained myself to become a morning person and now it’s easy. I booked an early gym session t my gym you only get a certain number of sessions a month, so you don’t want to waste one by not turning up. Then I set in place a routine, loo, teeth, coffee, get dressed etc and just did it even if I was half asleep. Took about ten days to become normal. I’d recommend reading James Clears habits book.

Branster · 19/01/2023 07:08

I rarely use an alarm and naturally open my eyes very early. What gets me out of the bed is the knowledge that I can get 30-60 minutes all to myself. I also have a mental To Do list for the day (work or home related) and I want to get through it.Thirdly, as soon as I open my eyes or stir in any way, my dogs know and come to my side of the bed staring straight at me - that definitely gets me out of the bed.
Once I'm up, I'm up, I don't stay in bed for a snooze. Conversely, when I go to sleep, I fall asleep straightaway, which probably helps.
I'd say the first 30-60 minutes of the day are only for me: cup of coffee, skincare, some light exercises, catching up on news, sitting down with my dogs on the sofa in complete silence, just a good start to the day. To me, it is more rewarding than an extra hour in bed. So basically I'm up earlier than strictly necessary without an alarm clock because it feels good and it does me good.
Days are usually full on and I don't get much time to reflect or regroup until the next morning session.
