So I have unexpectedly been gifted £500 - from a relative who said to use it as you choose!

current options which I welcome thoughts on or other suggestions

a) pay off big chunk of family holiday (total cost is £1k -so spend it on family

b) put into savings (but don’t need to do this and don’t feel it’s entirely what relative intends) could also split between children’s savings which I think they might prefer

c) put it in my account and allow myself more ‘little treats’ eg my coat is 10 years old and could really do with replacing (has rips and no hood, go for dinner with friends without having to think of what can afford this month, just buying a brand new book I would love rather than waiting for library to get it etc

what would you do?

C. Obviously. This money is for you enjoy it x

BasiliskStare · 19/01/2023 02:45

half or some a and half or more c if it were me. If you are doing OK on savings you will be able to top up DCs at some point. Definitely new coat & not sure of what your coat budget is - go out with friends / buy a book without a care - what a lovely decision to have to make - good luck to you and what a lovely relative

OzziePopPop · 19/01/2023 03:14

C - that’s what it was given to you for 🎁

HirplesWithHaggis · 19/01/2023 03:23

Definitely c. Enjoy!

Do C. If it’s a treat for you, do something for you.
get a new coat and buy yourself something that will make you feel good

talkingmorenonsense · 19/01/2023 04:12

How lovely for you. It’s a fucking great big C from me. Enjoy.

AgentProvocateur · 19/01/2023 04:18

C of course. That’s what your relative would have wanted.

Oh wow was expecting far more people to tell me not to be frivolous! I think the splitting it in half option might be sensible actually! I think if I frittered it all away ( even on really nice things!) I might feel guilty so using a chunk for the holiday and keeping a big chunk for me might be the right choice!

I'd put £100 to A so you don't feel guilty then the rest on you.

A lovely warm cozy coat with a hood.

An afternoon out where I bought the book, a nice coffee and cake.

A meal out with friends.

Chuck £200 into family holiday fund. The rest is for you - the coat plus holiday clothes. Books, beauty treatments etc
