Is there a job which is NOT needed?

I mean, does anyone know of an actual existing post in any firm, company, organisation, where the employers' believe that they don't need to pay someone to do that work, but it's just nice to have someone there and to pay them for the privilege? That they could sack that person, not fill the vacancy adn there would be no effect on anything except their payroll is a bit less?

Any Equality, Diversity & Inclusion person who spends 90% of their time focusing on just 1 of the protected characteristics?

I totally agree

Meters and greeters at stores like dunelm/curry’s/some supermarkets come to mind.

They don't do that for fun, they're partly about security (reducing losses) and partly about customer service (increasing sales).

Hitchhikers? Or am I making that up?

Just googled to check. Grin

People who are external providers of INSETs in an educational setting.

Also people who provide company team-building days. They always have the opposite effect to the purported one.

Georgyporky · 18/01/2023 18:18

The entire RF.

HeadNorth · 18/01/2023 18:19

Tayside Council sacked their male Period Dignity Officer without seeing the need to replace him…

To the king I would add all the Royal Family - many countries function perfectly well without one, so obviously not essential to have in these straightened times.

HeadNorth · 18/01/2023 18:20

@Georgyporky cross post 😁

Mine work, but they didn't come as standard, they're an added extra! I believe bmw's come with the same issue 😂😂

The layers and layers of managers in the NHS. That’s where the money that should be paying nurses and clinicians is going.
I am an admin worker and above me there are about 6 layers of managers just for admin.
it’s absolutely ridiculous and a huge waste of funds that could be used better elsewhere in the NHS.

This, a million times over (retired NHS clerical officer).

BuggerOffAngel · 18/01/2023 18:24

Mine probably. Mostly I deal with FOIs requested by trans lobbyists wanting to know what provisions there are for kids. Kids.

I take minutes. I think they should just record meetings and keep the recordings

I chair 3 regional meetings a month, which are significant in ensuring that the public body I work for meets its legal requirements, commitments and objectives. Concise, well written minutes are essential! I don't want to drag through 2 hours of recording to check on my actions, or the detail of how we decided to deliver x objective locally.

That's made me feel a bit better about my role. I always think no-one even looks at them. Maybe I'm not pointless afterall.

Telephone sanitisers.

😆

BadNomad · 18/01/2023 18:31

There is a primary school near me with a lollipop man outside. There are also traffic lights right outside of it. The lollipop man spends his time pressing the button on the lights to summon the green man so people can cross the road. That seems kind of pointless to me.

No, they do quite a good job. We always forget our internal issues and are united in our hatred of this annoying person making us do stupid things.

naturalchiller · 18/01/2023 18:36

Social worker here (adults).

All the managers above my team manager who just have meetings about meetings about meetings and nothing changes...or if it does change it's a pointless thing that just makes things more difficult for the people who actually do the work. Get rid of them and divvy up their salaries to getting more much needed social workers!

DPotter · 18/01/2023 18:37

Telephone sanitisers

And looked what happened when they went !

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 18/01/2023 18:39

Loving the HHGTTH refs. Also feeling my age!

justasoul · 18/01/2023 18:40

I’ve done meeting and greeting when I worked in a DIY shop - that wasn’t my job, I was a showroom (kitchen and bathrooms) designer, the meeting and greeting was to get people into the showroom Grin

Metabigot · 18/01/2023 18:42

Yes, our current EDI manager or woke tsar as i call her.
It'd be easy enough to get her duties done by other managers with a bit of training as a bolt on to their role with any training updates done using external sources.

Complete waste of money once there has been the initial review and implementation of woke changes. Which could have been done using an interim.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 18/01/2023 18:43

Those so-called ‘relationship experts’ in daily heil articles.

I immediately think of uber cringey teams delivering awful team building experiences (or bus tours) on The Apprentice when you mention this! 🤣
Thankfully I've always worked for pretty small team who never required "building"

Iliveditwizbit · 18/01/2023 18:44

I think it’s much more a thing in continental Europe. People seem to languish in civil service jobs in certain countries for years. There was a memorable case in Germany:
