To ever wonder why I bother at work.

Does anyone ever wonder why they bother ? I'm not a Saint but always pulled my weight in work and try not to let the team down. However I seem to work with a lot of people who refuse to do their job, spend alot of time off sick and are honestly a bit lazy and will admit to being so! I can barely make ends meet and sometimes I wonder why am I pulling my weight whilst others aren't.

Because you have self respect?

PennythePenguin · 17/01/2023 23:25

I hope so but I'm getting a bit knackered with it all.

Its like I'm happy to mentor staff but when you're trying to reinforce good practice over and over and nothing changes.

Don’t go the extra mile then? You’re not getting paid to be more productive than your colleagues. I think you should work smarter, not harder, and don’t allow work to make you feel stressed (you said you barely make ends meet). How will management know there’s a staffing or performance issue if you’re covering up the problem by doing extra work?

Is it your job role to mentor these people? Ie are you their manager or HR/capability team?

Yummymummy2020 · 17/01/2023 23:31

Tell me about it it’s the exact same in my place. Management don’t care once the work is done in my experience and because I’m in healthcare I feel really bad for people so work extra hard to make up the short fall. I do think however the person above is correct, in that we probably shouldn’t go the extra mile. It’s not appreciated and we are the ones that end up burnt out!

WhiteFire · 17/01/2023 23:31

Is it the right time to look for a new job?

CrapBucket · 17/01/2023 23:33

I hear you. 21 years here of being the fucking muppet that loves their job and customer, but Jesus Christ the directors couldn't give a shit.

I'm not a manager. Management know they're shit but won't address it.

Some people just literally have no work ethic

PerpetualFailure · 18/01/2023 08:00

I left a place like that. Weak management. Poor work ethic and second jobs rampant. Nope.

Windbeneathmybingowings · 18/01/2023 08:03

For me I find that because I work quickly, i am often able to spot loop holes and gaps in our service. I’m very good at trouble shooting. In a couple of roles I made spreadsheets and ideas for improvement. Presented them to management, told no this is beyond your scope etc - maybe it is but it solved a problem.

Only to find out that my slides had been presented to directors as though it was part of my managers role. 😡

There is a lot of gate keeping that goes on and people not wanting to improve or look for solutions. Just do as you’re told is often the mantra.

I’ve found a role now where people are really pleased when you improve something and like wise if they spot something I’m doing that can be streamlined, all the better. You need a new job.

gettingolderandgrumpier · 18/01/2023 08:07

I know what you mean , I’m a hard worker( I think I am anyway ) . But you see people not giving a shit doing the bear minimum but complaining how busy they are but will do nothing to change and any suggestions to improve are ignored .Also I’ve got colleagues who are qualified aren’t trained properly and aren’t interested in using own initiative for fear of getting it wrong .
So you carry the bulk of the workload because management won’t listen as long as work gets done , it’s exhausting and personally I can’t be arsed anymore.

Same!

PennythePenguin · 18/01/2023 10:59

I'm a single parent and they've given me flexible hours so I'm a bit stuck tbh. I also work fast and I think sometimes that's a downfall. Also I think a lot of places are the same. The lazy or gobby ones get their way.

Or the ones who start crying and getting emotional if they are challenged always get away with murder

PennythePenguin · 18/01/2023 15:13

Ffs I know! Or the ones that think it looks good to go moaning to management

I'm not a manager. Management know they're shit but won't address it.

Stop mentoring people immediately then. Highlight to your manager that the team needs training on X and Y problem keeps occurring. Make it your manager’s problem to deal with - they’re getting paid more than you to sort shit like this out. If they don’t act, then it’s not your problem. The onus doesn’t fall on you to do extra work

PennythePenguin · 18/01/2023 18:27

Yes I'm paid to mentor to a point but if it's pointless then I will be referred to management.

OP posts:
PennythePenguin · 18/01/2023 21:50

It's just not in my nature to leave things undone though. I've decided I'm not going to clear the phone calls from people after they moan about the amount whilst they've sat talking for hours or sorting out a family drama again. I Will mentor but when she takes nothing on board refer to management.
