Which wine would you drink with chicken kiev and southern fried chicken?

I have a bottle of Californian Chardonnay (Dark Horse) and one of South African Chenin Blanc (First Cape). I think the garlic in the chicken dishes might clash with the oaky Chardonnay or overpower the Chenin.

Talk about first world problem...

Lambrini isn't on the menu. And the chicken kiev is far from humble - it's a posh one from Booth's, the fancy supermarket! So there😉.

I don't remember if I've drunk Chenin Blanc before but my reading of the label suggests it's a bit of a lightweight. Not as airy fairy as Pinot Grigio, I hope. I've had Dark Horse Chardonnay lots of times. For a white wine, it's quite burly and muscular, IYSWIM.

I think Chardonnay would be fine, not too heavy and oaky though.

Or you could try a white Rioja - Lidl do an excellent one, can't remember what it's called though.

I'm from the Deep South. The most authentic drink with Southern fried chicken would be sweet iced tea, but if alcoholic, a beer is better than wine in my opinion.

Also, you shouldn't have a lot of garlic in Southern fried chicken.

I bloody love a chicken Kiev or SFC! This is typical snarky, snarf snarf, oh how ghastly Mumsnet. You drink whatever you fancy and enjoy your chicken OP.

Ifailed · 17/01/2023 20:43

I'm from the Deep South.

OP's chicken is from Booths, in the far north. They do things differently there.

TangledWebOfDeception · 17/01/2023 20:44

Beer.

Damn, now I fancy Korean Fried Chicken. Angry

Tessisme · 17/01/2023 20:46

Chicken Kiev. Yum😋😋

Sorry, no idea about the wine. All of it?

saveforthat · 17/01/2023 20:48

I only like red so I drink red with everything.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 17/01/2023 20:49

I'd actually go with a light red for that; a Beaujolais would suit well. If you MUST have white, Riesling is very forgiving of strong flavours.

WildRosie · 17/01/2023 20:51

I do have a Beaujolais in the wine rack, just between the Chateau Petrus and the Dom Perignon '54. But I'm keeping it until the spring.

Skinnermarink · 17/01/2023 20:59

It’s not snarky, it’s just I wouldn’t bother pairing wine with breaded chicken, I’d just crack one open 🤷🏻‍♀️I love chicken Kiev and wine 🤣

smileladiesplease · 17/01/2023 21:02

Both idiot SmileSmileSmileSmile

Are you serious? Hope not. I would just drink whatever I want. Chicken Kiev and Fried chicken both sounds like you'd drink anything you have.

Our of a chipped mug.

smileladiesplease · 17/01/2023 21:03

Oh my SmileSmileSmile

WildRosie · 17/01/2023 21:03

Mellow out folks. We don't need to take any of this too seriously. It's not The Ritz.

Christ sorry meant to add smiles but didn't seem to work :)

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 17/01/2023 21:05

Tizer.

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 17/01/2023 21:06

I don't get this thread. What is the purpose of this? Taking mickey out of MC, it sounds off. As a joke thread, it sounds off too.
Sorry, I'm a foreigner, don't get British joke. Really love to understand though.

WildRosie · 17/01/2023 21:07

BTW, the southern fried chicken is from Sainsbury's. Perfectly good quality but maybe not that authentic so perhaps the wine pairing isn't that crucial after all.

OP posts:
TangledWebOfDeception · 17/01/2023 21:07

It’s not a joke thread. Unless I’ve missed something...

DivaBeliever · 17/01/2023 21:08

Gosh! These sneery comments are something to behold...

Garlic and chicken is hardly an uncommon combination.

I think you should have whatever you fancy OP, and leave their glass of judgement on the side.

I hope you enjoy it x

WildRosie · 17/01/2023 21:10

grape. It isn't a joke thread. It's just seeking opinions about wine and food pairings. Nevertheless, it's not to be taken too seriously🙂. There are conventions about this subject but no rules.

Yesthatismychildsigh · 17/01/2023 21:10

Depends what’s easiest to nick from the corner shop.

ComfortablyDazed · 17/01/2023 21:14

I don’t understand the point of either Chenin Blanc (wine-flavoured water), or Chablis (Chardonnay, but without the divine oaky/butteriness).

So on that basis, it’s Chardonnay for the win, for me.
