Who do you tip?

I live in England and the only place I tip is in a restaurant if the service has been good, I will also remove the service charge if I feel it's undeserved.

I will occasionally allow people to keep the change up to £10 if paying for a service like hair etc in cash and I think they have done a good job, but definitely not every time.

I have noticed more and more places seem to be following America and giving the option to add a tip on card machines etc.

Nobody. In in Australia and it's creeping in. Staff are paid very well in these roles (although they complain). Penalty rates on public holidays cam be insane (2 or 2x).

Prices are very high as well. If we start normalising tips here, then prices need to drop. I suspect they won't, but wages will.

I tip my hairdresser because I use the same one all the time and he’s relatively cheap. Tipping means he will do little extras that wouldn’t usually be included. I tip in restaurants if the service has been good, but I don’t leave one if the service has been below standard.

I think tipping should be abolished. I don't tip anywhere.

It's probably not the best strategy but I tip what I have until I run out. I use taxis frequently as I don't drive so I always tip £1-50p depending on what I have but often I have nothing spare which is a shame.

I tip 10% of bills but always remove from card machine or bill and give cash directly to the waiter.

Treatments I tip £2-£3 again depending on what I have.

I keep a tight budget but am generous to service workers when I can be.

I tip anywhere that I eat unless service is poor. 10-20% depending on level of service. Hospitality staff rely on tips to bump up their otherwise often minimum wage and if the service/food are good they work hard and deserve it.

I’d apply the same to any service if I used them (hairdresser/gardener/cleaner etc)

I tip taxi drivers, hairdresser, my nail girl, in restaurants, and takeaway delivery drivers.

I do the same as @Tequilamockinbird

I'm amazed that people top a certain % in the UK. I usually just let them keep the change as a tip

I only tip in restaurants, and then only if I was happy with the service. Didn't know about Uber drivers giving you a bad score if you don't tip; that's ridiculous! Luckily where I live there is no Uber anyway.

Withholdingvitalinfo · 18/01/2023 08:19

Same as most people - hairdresser, nails, taxis, restaurants (always try to give cash so they get it).

Cleaner gets more at Christmas and unsociable hours but that’s not a tip it’s overtime/Christmas gift. Ditto bin men and postie at Christmas.

It’s nice to be nice and I can afford it.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 18/01/2023 08:28

Occasionally in a restaurant but not always.

I'm poor and I don't really understand tipping, I find it really awkward and then get flustered thinking it's too much or not enough!

Hairdressers are so expensive now there's no chance I can afford to tip as well as pay for the haircut.
