Migraines

I’m really struggling. Suffering from headaches which often turn to migraines very regularly. At least one a week. The effects can last days. Throwing up, not being able to sleep because of the pain, sensitivity to light and just unable to function at all.

There’s probably something really wrong with me isn’t there. I’m trying to get a doctors appointment but struggling.

What can they even do? Is there such a thing as daily migraine medication to stop them?

Yes there are lots of medications that can be used to help prevent a migraine. just going through this with my Ds (18) who has suffered migraines for several years. Have you done the basics? Tried migraleve etc (pink and yellow). Speak to a pharmacist while you're waiting for the GP.

Yes I take one amitriptaline each day to avoid my migraines which sound similar to yours. I also take a sumitripan when I feel even a slight headache developing. They have been a god send. All done via GP

Have you spoken to a GP?
Are these new or have you suffered them for a while? Does anyone in your family suffer?

I'm asking as someone who has suffered migraines since the age of 13. They run in my family.
They get worse with stress and also hormones.

If you don't already, can you get an eye test? Eye strain can cause terrible migraine, as can certain foods (chocolate and cheese for me) or not drinking enough water.

I find Nuramol can help quite a bit with mine and also drinking plenty of water a day. I also get regular eye tests as I wear glasses.

Yes, there are daily preventers and also medicines which you can take to stop/reduce the migraines at the first signs.

I'd start by keeping a migraine daily, everything you eat and drink, sleep, how stressed you're feeling, which day of your cycle you're on etc and that can help you also identify any triggers.

I used to get migraines once a month that sound like yours. I now take one propranolol a day and I’ve only had one migraine all year and that was brought on by major stress! Doesn’t work for everyone but may be worth a try. Good luck.

Yes, agree with previous posts...there is alot that can be done these days. Ive suffered from migraines since my early teens and cluster headaches since my early 20's. Unfortunately over the counter medication has never worked for me, so I would encourage a GP appointment as soon as possible. The Migraine Trust have alot of info on their website which you may find helpful, and yes, things like a daily diary of what you eat, sleep patterns etc to try and identify triggers.
Finally I'm on what appears to be the correct dosage of propranolol, and I use sumatriptan injections when I have an attack. The combination of these has resulted in my attacks being alot less frequent and within 3 hours I can move around again, as opposed to the 7-10 hours I couldn't move. Keep persevering, you'll find what works for you!

Thanks so much everyone. After a day of being sick every time I moved I managed to get a same day GP appointment

i have very high blood pressure which could be caused by the migraine itself but I have to go back in a week to check.

He prescribed me sumatriptan. My god. Within an hour of taking it I was almost feeling normal again.

I hope I don’t have to suffer continually anymore.

Glad you got some relief there Op!
Giving up caffeine is what stopped them for me.
That was a hard ask as I had already given up alcohol, but the tests showed iit up and goddammit it worked.
Good luck at figuring out your triggers.

First of all sorry OP you suffer from the dreaded migraines! I do too so I know how you feel getting them. Yesterday I was in bed all day in-between throwing up and screaming in pain with mine. I couldn't eat a thing. Mines related to my Endometriosis and sets it off. It may last a day or it could last for days. Secondly the advice I've read from other posters has been so useful. I hope you manage to get relief from your migraines OP.

Ginger Ale is the world's best kept secret. Works a treat on the nausea. Glad you got to the gp.
