I just learned that Frankie Valli doesn't sing the lead on Oh What A Night. The drummer, Gerry Polci does, and what a voice he has, I'm not a Four Seasons fan so didn't question it but listening to it now it's really obvious that it's a different person.

What random things have you discovered lately?

I went to The British Museum in 21.

Broccoli and cauliflower are man made. They were bred from a cabbage type plant called the Brassica oleracea.

There local farm shop has purple cauliflower which I’ve seen before and a bright orange one too which I’ve never seen before and didn’t look appealing

The Britney Spears smash hit Toxic was written about Noel Fitzpatrick (the supervet) by his ex. Still a classic pop tune though.

@Georgeskitchen You've got to be kidding! I'm pregnant and work in police station! I'm going to have fun tomorrow 😂

Just warn them to check before they put their helmets on 🤣🤣

The Swiss eat the most chocolate in Europe but have the lowest obesity rate. I need the know their secret.

Not something I learned today but an interesting piece of trivia nonetheless: populations living at altitude tend to have lower rates of obesity.

Might explain the Swiss.

My favourite random fact is that John Tyler, the 10th president of the United States and born in 1790, has a grandson who is still alive today.

It is not legal to wee in a policeman's helmet. It's a myth.

Baby Puffins are called Pufflets (Stephen Fry said so, so it must be true😄)

Prior to being a fledgling, baby birds, when still in the nest, are called nestlings 🐤🪹♥️

I can hum with my nose closed.

Andie MacDowell was the pretty young thing in the Lord Greystoke Tarzan movie (Chris Lambert?). AM hasn't done any interesting roles in about 20 years but is still considered a senior Hollywood person. Hmm

Oh and Glenn Close voiced Nala in the animated Tarzan movie (Phil Collins soundtrack).

Look, it beats me googling weird facts about H&M.

On the subject of Tarzan, I recently learned that Mia Farrow's mother was Maureen O'Sullivan who played Jane opposite Johnny Weissmuller as Tarzan.

PinkArt · 17/01/2023 20:30

Yup, the wonderful Cathy Dennis, @1000yellowdaisies. Noel's suggested though that if Toxic is allegedly about him, then so must Can't Get You Out Of My Head!
Mine are Gona G related. The dress she wore at Eurovision was originally made for Cher. And one of her backing dancers at the song contest went on to write Sound Of The Underground

Baby spiders are called spiderlings

That Basil Rathbone (the actor) won a bravery medal in the first world war because after his brother was killed in the trenches, he was so depressed he volunteered for all kinds of dangerous recce missions and miraculously survived.

That mothers will carry fetal cells in their bodies for decades after the pregnancy ends. Sounds odd but i find it comforting to know even the babies I didn’t get to bring home will have left an imprint in my body.

  • That water with a very low mineral content makes your mouth feel dry.
  • That only sea fish are really smelly (it’s due to bacteria feeding on the compound sea fish produce that allows them to tolerate salt water)
  • Cooking a smelly fish with lemon juice gets rid of the smell

I watched an episode of Food unwrapped tonight, can you tell?

That the T-Rex dinosaur is closer in age to humans than it is to the stegosaurs

blew my mind

I went to the Victoria and Albert Museum and neither of them were there.

Although I've just remembered I never checked the toilets!

That Mrs Elswood pickles take their name from the areas where the founders lived - Elstree and St John's Wood

the80sweregreat · 17/01/2023 20:54

Pineapples don't grow on trees.
( as someone wrote on a thread like this once , that 'aga doo ' novelty song has a lot to answer for regarding this fact !)

WineIsMyCarb · 17/01/2023 20:55

@TheBestUsernamesAreGone I identify as trans-seahorse in that case. What's your excuse?!

I thought this was BS so googled it. It's true! The grandson was born 1928. And is still alive. Harrison Ruffin Tyler. Incredible. His father had him age 75. And his grandfather was 63 when he had that son. Incredible.

Beancounter1 · 17/01/2023 21:10

Cleave is a word that also means its opposite.
When you cleave a log you split it apart. When you cleave to something you bind yourself tightly to it.

DawdlingService · 17/01/2023 21:12

IggyAce I'm so sorry for your loss. Flowers
