Anyone who gets the depo shot - can you give me your experiences?

I don’t do very well with hormone contraceptives that I’ve tried E.g numerous pills that all make me a witch with 0 patience and rather angry all the time. And the implant made me put on so much weight 😔 OH is considering vasectomy if I’m 100% on it, but part of me could see a third a few years. So I’m toying with depo shot or last resort coil. Can anyone give me their experiences with the depo shot?

Oh feck. Mega feck. I shan’t give it another thought then ☠️

sorry you had so many issues with it! If you don’t mind me asking, what did you settle on in the end?

I reverted to using condoms. It took a while for the depo side effects to stop fucking me up, and I didn't want anything to clash. After that, I had an implant put in my arm which seemed to work rather well.

A copper coil has no hormones and a mirena has very little so either of these are likely to suit you better if you are sensitive to hormones . They are also easy to remove and once out their effect wears off within hours whereas with the depo you might have residual effects , if you are unlucky, for months.

Had one injection hoping to love it and hated it. I bled constantly for 5 months, never again I've heard too many negative stories.

Made me fat, spotty and a horrible person. Was very effective contraception.

AuraBora · 19/01/2023 12:54

Found it convenient (much more so than Pill) and didn't have any obvious side effects. I'd never had any problem hormonal with the Pill just found the daily taking of it a pain..

However I do question whether it affected my libido (like other PPs mention) - I always put that down to tiredness from having a baby/toddler but I do seem to have regained libido a bit since I went on mirena coil after baby no.2.
Might not be best option if you would like to have baby no 3 at some point as can take a while cor periods to return once off it...

Mavericksaviators · 19/01/2023 13:03

Had it for 9 months after my daughter. I put 2 stone on. No periods on it, bleed for 18 months solid after. I’d never recommend it

Yarrawonga · 19/01/2023 13:14

Was very effective contraception.

I found that with the mirena. My husband lost all interest.

And in terms of the comment on a long time to regain fertility...after 9 years, I was unexpectedly pregnant within 2 months of stopping, so I suppose it is different for everyone.

This is lovely to hear - all I've ever been told is that it takes ages!

007DoubleOSeven · 19/01/2023 18:41

Sorry I didn't see you'd already replied fo suggestion of implant when I went and suggested it again! Is the coil an option for you?

3 months worth of progesterone in one go made me feel suicidal. I think if youre sensitive to hormones already then its a bad idea to have something that you cant stop taking or have taken out. 3 months of feeling that low feels like an eternity and is very disabling while waiting for it to wear off

Oh 😔 I’m so sorry you went through that. What a long few months for you. Hope you’re doing ok now. What have you settled on now contraception-wise if you don’t mind me asking?

yeah I’m highly reactive to hormones annoyingly. I recently fell pregnant (unexpectedly, and didn’t know for a short while) and I was so unmotivated, impatient, rude, a total dick. Then found out I was pregnant and it all made sense. Sadly we don’t have the means for a baby right now with space/money so had to terminate which was tough. So desperate for it to not happen again! However, really struggling with what to go for x

It’s definitely a shout for the copper one. I think it’s literally my last choice now! Aside from condoms, which we are currently using however I don’t see them as long term so yeah, might have to investigate coil and hope it doesn’t make me bleed a lot like I’ve heard it has others 😔

Thanks. I ended up using the copper coil which was brilliant. Then I decided to get sterilised once id finished my family.

Without going into too much detail, it hurt him. Getting the tags trimmed was supposed to help but it made it ten times worse worse. He made references to barbed wire.

Brendabigbaps · 20/01/2023 12:27

Loved it, no periods, no period pains etc, until around 10mths later I fell pregnant about 3 weeks after having it

lemontart13 · 24/05/2025 23:53

Some people love it, others have a hellish time: mood swings, weight gain, libido crash, bleeding... and the worst part is, once it's in, you're stuck with it for months.

If anyone's seriously considering it, it might be worth reading this FDA Warning on Depo-Provera. There have been concerns raised over long-term bone density loss and other side effects that aren't always properly explained up front. It's not about scaring anyone, just good to go in with full info before deciding.
