I'm an acupuncturist so obviously have had lots. The reason I trained was because it worked so well on my frozen shoulder and I found it so relaxing.
I try and give people as honest an indication on the effectiveness of treatment on a particular condition as possible before they start. However it is not an exact science. Things I would recommend it for almost every time (although if course not 100% works):
Fibromyalgia, shoulder and neck pain, tennis elbow, knee pain, painful periods, sinusitis, migraines, carpal tunnel, Achilles pain, plantar fascitis.
If having IVF so worth it (especially either side of implantation).
Stress, anxiety, insomnia.
Nausea (chemo/morning sickness) alleviating colitis and IBS.

Run a mile from any practitioner claiming it can "cure" cancer, long term tinnitus, hearing loss, sight, genetic conditions etc. Or if they say it is guaranteed. Also if they try and sell Chinese herbs at vast expense. I run a low cost clinic, where we treat a few people at the same time so bring the price down to £15.

Unfortunately many physios have only had a few days of training and almost always when someone says they had acupuncture and hated it was off a physio. Get to a fully qualified acupuncturist if you can (3 years BSc for me). And make sure they are registered with a professional body (British acupuncture association for example).
If anyone wants to know if a specific conditions works well with acupuncture just ask :)

I've got frozen shoulder at the moment and was thinking of acupuncture. Are you near me? (South east)

How many sessions would you recommend? Where do they put the needles?

cakewitch · 17/01/2023 21:30

Had it for lower back pain recently. It didn't help for me.

I had it when I had some weird thing when you can’t open your legs. I was pregnant and it was caused by the ligaments stretching.
So I had to remove clothing from the affected area.
Lie down
She put needles in relevant places
I was left alone to relax
She came back after a half hour or so and removed the needles
Amazingly I had no problems after

tshirthunter · 17/01/2023 21:37

I had it for hormonal headaches and ended up with a surprise pregnancy as well as a lot less headaches. Re pp I was given a certificate to take to blood donor centre so could still donate. Not sure if that has changed or not. I'm going to book some more sessions now after reading this.

WoolyMammoth55 · 17/01/2023 21:40

I have usually had acupuncture from TCM qualified acupuncturists; it's part of the traditional Chinese medicine system so wouldn't see someone who had no expert knowledge of the underlying philosophy (IYSWIM?)

I've found it massively effective. If I get a tickly cough I always go for a treatment to support me to avoid the cough getting bad/worse. I also found it really helpful for mild depression.

I think very often, people who think it's a waste of time have usually just been treated by a non-expert practitioner. When you see someone who knows their stuff it's great.

Thesonglastslonger · 17/01/2023 21:42

Infertility

Found it unpleasant and weird

I binned it when she started pressuring me to take weird pills from China with dodgy ingredients

No it did not work

Having looked into it a bit more I suspect if you have eg back pain or a knee injury, it can work as it stimulates the area to heal, but it did fuck all for my PCOS.

Roominmyhouse · 17/01/2023 21:46

I had it from my physio for shoulder pain and found it brilliant. I’d reached a point where the usual manipulation and treatment wasn’t getting anywhere but the acupuncture make a huge difference. I think I had 4/5 sessions and I’ve been pretty much pain free since. I’d definitely have it again for anything similar.

They wouldn’t let me donate within four months, I think it was.

I had an incredibly painful foot and was struggling to walk and my doctor actually gave me acupuncture and the relief was amazing! It took a few rounds to completely get rid of the pain but it worked so much better than all the pain meds they gave me!

Iflyaway · 17/01/2023 22:17

@Andrelaxzzz

Is it any good for skin diseases?

Having come across this thread, I've had acupuncture years ago, yes it worked.

Think I'll just go down to the Chinese medical centre and give it another go.

upinaballoon · 17/01/2023 22:18

I tried it for migraine and it didn't work, except I could never tell if I might have had worse migraines without it. However, I liked the sessions and I liked the little face/head massage that came with it.
They did sell me some foul-tasting herbs.
If I had been able to go to them the moment a migraine came it might have worked.
One day I went for the usual session but I had a really bad cold with a 'bunged-up nose'. He put two extra needles in, one on either side of my upper nose, and my cold just drained away nicely over the next few days, much easier than aspirins and inhaling etc.

Testng123 · 17/01/2023 22:22

Yes, I would lucky to find an amazing acu
puncturist who has since moved...I miss her! Tried a few others but they weren't as good.

Among other things, I went for reflux....took one session and I never had it again. It was like flicking a switch.

BitOutOfPractice · 17/01/2023 22:23

Yes, from my physio for a frozen shoulder. It really helped.

CoQ10 · 17/01/2023 22:26

Yes

She's a lucky find. I went to her for.neck pain and have been seeing her for a year through peri menopause and other ailments.

There have been times when I've been with her, and it literally felt like what I imagine the laying of the hands to be

She has healing qualities that emanate from her. It's freaky.

AdoraBell · 17/01/2023 22:26

I did in my early 20’s. I had a host of issues which it turned out was my body telling me to get away from my abusive boyfriend, so the acupuncture had no chance of working.

I’m sure it could work in other situations.

I would definitely recommend it for frozen shoulder. I am at the other end of the country but look up a therapist on acupuncture.org.uk/
And you will find someone more local and qualified.
As to where the needles are placed and how many depends on various factors but will predominantly be around the affected shoulder then on your arm/hand neck and a couple on your legs. They might use so heat (moxa or heat lamp too).

Skin issues are really interesting. Sometimes it works literal miracles and sometimes doesn't help at all. Definitely seems to help more for psoriasis or if stress is an issue

earsup · 17/01/2023 22:55

Have had it for over 40 years...brilliant....love it...i go once a month for the 4 gates points which is immune system boost to prevent colds, virus etc....and you feel so nice and floaty after also....!..Am lucky I have a chinese chap opp my house who only charges £20 a session....not the £60 etc others now charge.

Does it work for easing heavy periods and helping with the pain? Also hormonal skin?
