I want to get my daughter this vintage 29cm Le Creuset casserole dish. It’s on eBay for £60.00 plus £14.50 P&P. Ive attached a picture of it - would it clean up and is it worth £74? - it does say make an offer on eBay TIA

Le Creuset advice please

We bought one in a similar condition years ago and it's been brilliant - I still use it almost every day. It cost £15 though - I wouldn't have paid £70!

bellinisurge · 16/01/2023 07:31

Bought my Le Creuset in the 90s. On a serious markdown or I wouldn't have afforded it. I'm not the world's tidiest but my Le Crueset doesn't look like that. I also have a cheapo knock off massive shallow one I got from Morrisons about 15 years ago. It compares well. Also a massive one from IKEA. Also does well.
Waste of money, op.

There were good deals on Le Creuset on Brand Alley a couple of days ago, worth checking there.

Nope! My not terribly well cared for version looks better than that. Sainsbury's do some lovely cast iron pots. Also, if you're near an outlet village with a Le Creuset shop you can get the real thing at better prices than at the dept stores or online. Try that if you're determined to get the real thing.
Unless you want to put in a cheeky offer of say £20. No more

Top tip for whitening insides of le creuseuts… leave overnight filled with mix of water and Milton (baby bottle sterilising liquid). White as white the next day!

but agree with pp- I’d go tk maxx or a better condition one that’s second hand

FannythePinkFlamingo · 16/01/2023 07:44

Echoing others, the Aldi ones are fab and a fraction of the price of Le Creuset. I'm waiting for a lidded shallow pan now next time they have them in.

lenalemonade · 16/01/2023 07:49

Another recommendation for the Aldi version .I got a massive shallow lidded casserole,a smaller casserole with a lid and a frying pan for just over £50.
Use them every week and they are still like brand new.

Look on TK Maxx, Le Creuset oval casserole dish £29

Friendofdennis · 16/01/2023 01:22

No. You can get new le creuset at tk maxx and homesense

I was coming on to say this!

ssd · 16/01/2023 08:29

Ive got some burnt out old pans somewhere if you want those as well op.

DoorstoManual · 16/01/2023 00:52

I would not pay that.

The pot is manky, the lid is manky and the cover of the Aga is manky.

My Le Crueset is thirty years old and it doesn’t look like that.

All of this. Especially the dirty job. Grim.

Yesthatismychildsigh · 16/01/2023 08:42

*hob. Not job.

positivethoughts1 · 16/01/2023 08:09

That’s stoneware. Not cast iron. Completely different.

determinedtomakethiswork · 16/01/2023 08:45

I wouldn't buy that for anything. And how much is the postage going to cost?

ginslinger · 16/01/2023 08:51

that's a hard no from me

hennybeans · 16/01/2023 08:52

I have a Le Creuset pot similar to this that was a wedding gift. I also have the Sainsbury’s version that is slightly bigger. Honestly, they are identical in performance, weight, finish. The Sainsbury’s version is much better value.

I don’t think that pan would clean up that well either.

Annabel073 · 16/01/2023 08:53

Is there a reason why she wants this particular item? If not, look for a good deal on a similar one online. If she wants Le Creuset, don't buy crap from Aldi or anywhere else or it will go straight to the charity shop.

ByTheGrace · 16/01/2023 09:09

I wouldn't touch that with a bargepole and the price is crazy.

I have Le Creuset and have had the Sainsbury's ones, I didn't rate the Sainsbury's as they seemed heavier and LeC are heavy enough, also they chipped really easily and then went rusty in the dishwasher.
John Lewis used to have their own brand with a good warranty, not sure if they still do.

That said if she specifically wants LeC she may be disappointed with anything else. Mine were on my wedding list, they are still going strong 27yrs later, I wouldn't have wanted a different make.

BarbaraofSeville · 16/01/2023 09:24

You want to get it for her, but does she actually want it?

I wouldn't thank anyone for a casserole dish so heavy I couldn't lift it and difficult to clean. They look nice, but unless she wants it, she'll probably hate it every time she has to lift it or scrub at it.

LexMitior · 16/01/2023 09:26

John Lewis do perfectly acceptable copies of Le C.

I cannot really see any difference between the two. Le C has lasted 20 years, I expected it to do that. But the copies you can get now are very good, though not sure on the longevity.

RedCarsGoFaster · 16/01/2023 09:30

I bought one in very similar condition from a local carvery pub selling off their old and well used pots that looked crap. I paid £10. If someone had bought it for me in that state I'd have been a bit bemused.....

Don't get me wrong, I use it a lot, but I bought it to decide whether I would actually use it enough to treat myself to a new one, and I will!

Orangebadger · 16/01/2023 09:35

I have that one, it was a wedding gift to my parents in 1970. Mine looks much better that that. I love it but I would not pay that much for a used one!

keri17 · 16/01/2023 09:38

Are the knock offs lighter? I can’t stand our Le Cruset set, so heavy!!!

mrspiersmorgan · 16/01/2023 12:11

Going against the grain here I would buy it but not for £74. I actually bought some pans in a similar state and called le creuset for advise on cleaning them. They recommended boiling biological washing powder in the pan and gently scrubbing with a brush. Worked a treat they came up looking brand new.

Tamarindtree · 16/01/2023 12:23

One previous owner - Dennis Nilsen.

Do not buy it!
