Is it a man thing?

I love reading. I always have a book on the go - it's just what I enjoy doing in my spare time.

Ex-h also loved reading and we used to love chatting about the books we had read (we still do sometimes).

However, my last BF and now my current partner hate reading. Sometimes he might read a paper but only if it's there or if he needs to for work.

I was telling my mum about it and we both thought that most people nowadays don't read (including audio books). My sister's view is that most people still read something and it's a problem if they don't.

I'm curious to know what other people's experiences are on this and how many people still read?

I love reading. My husband loves reading.
When we went on holiday, we would read a book each a day while lying out in the sun (we are not very active on holiday) 😂

Unfortunately very little time for reading now with 2 DC under 3 but would absolutely love to pick up a book if I could guarantee the toddler would stay asleep 😂

I read, so does DH.

Confused No, not a 'man thing'. Some people read, some don't. It is lower than previously due to screens - but higher than 200 years ago!

I read a lot, Late DH read quite a lot, DP not much but does occasionally, although it is more online stuff about his hobbies and more rarely a book.

DH and I are both readers, me more so. Tonight we have been sorting in the lounge, both giggling at our respective books (one fiction, one autobiography).

Awrite · 15/01/2023 23:17

I read fiction. Was just telling ds how I spent my early teens reading book after book.

Dh reads non-ficton. He has books dotted about all over the house.

My kids both read.

Both my husband and I love to read. I wish I had more time to do so.

MokaEfti · 15/01/2023 23:19

Both DH and I read. In fact we met on an Eng Lit course!

My DH and I are both big readers and so is DD. My DB reads, Dbil and my DF read a lot.

No I don't think it is a man thing. Generally people are either readers or they are not. I have always been a reader and I think I would find it difficult to be in a relationship with a non reader.

BIWI · 15/01/2023 23:29

We're both big readers. We have book shelves everywhere we can in our house, and have run out of space for more.

He tends to read more non-fiction than I do, especially history. I tend to read more stuff about food/food science than he does, but we're also big fiction readers. I have a kindle, and actual books, he just reads books.

I can't imagine not reading. It's a great joy.

I agree.

And thinking about the example I was set - my Dad reads fiction. Fantasy type stuff. My Mum was the non fiction reader. Books everywhere.

TabbyM · 16/01/2023 16:39

Definitely not a man thing, both my Dad and my brother read, DH not so much but has concentration issues so reads articles instead.
