How much money do you send DC at uni?

How much money do you send your kids at uni? If you send them any at all?

DD goes to uni later this year (UCL). She's currently doing a year out working to save, but we're all a bit worried about finances. She plans to get a part time job when she gets there too.

None. Although my dd lives in a much cheaper city than London. And she lives in halls and has no costs to get to her lectures.

She didn't get a full loan and we top it up so it's the full loan amount.

KangarooKenny · 15/01/2023 21:39

We paid the accommodation and their mobile phone.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/01/2023 21:42

We did exactly the same as @KangarooKenny

Will your dd be eligible for the full loan ?

We paid the accommodation and their mobile phone.

We did the same for our 2 sons. They both worked full time during the holidays to pay for their extra stuff - festivals, socialising and clothes. Lived on their loans for everything else at uni.

Jdjdntbhh · 15/01/2023 21:43

following as it’s coming this summer! Do you send a food order every so often so they are eating/washing etc 😵‍💫

KangarooKenny · 15/01/2023 21:46

Mine worked the summers, and worked PT during term time too.

ChristmasJumpers · 15/01/2023 21:51

I was a student living away in 2012-2016. I got full student loan and supplemented with a part time job, no money from parents. I'd suggest ensuring that they have the equivalent of the full loan - any extra money they want they could work for. I was in Liverpool though so not as expensive

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 15/01/2023 21:51

We paid the accommodation, and did a big shop with them when we went to see them.

EconomyClassRockstar · 15/01/2023 21:55

We are not UK but we pay their fees and their accommodation and board. The kids then work during the holidays in order to pay for the fun stuff. Our "gift" to them is letting them graduate without student debt. We're not paying for their beer too.

Chewbecca · 15/01/2023 21:56

Topped up to full maintenance loan. They should all be able to live on that.

EconomyClassRockstar · 15/01/2023 21:57

DD also works in the campus store during term time as she is a little more conscious about having cash in her bank!

Comefromaway · 15/01/2023 21:59

It will depend on how much loan your child is entitled to.

Mine gets minimum so we top it up to the maximum. A young person who gets maximum loan should, in theory, be able to manage.

Timwith2noses · 15/01/2023 21:59

Mine is going this year, he’ll get minimum loan so we are ‘topping it up’ by paying for his accommodation so he can live on the loan. He’s got a part time job and some savings we have put aside over the years (not tons, and I’ve said I’d rather he didn’t use unless desperate - better to save for something big like a car/house imo. He’s going to need to work alongside his study, if he wants a social life I think.

I imagine we’ll send food/take him shopping when we visit and I’ve recently taken out a new phone contract for him so will at least pay that to the end of it, it’s still going to have over a year to run when he goes to uni.

Hadtochangeforthisone · 15/01/2023 22:01

I send nothing because I have nothing to send ..

She has max loan and works as a nanny 3-6 five days a week ..

FlyingPandas · 15/01/2023 22:01

We give the equivalent of the full loan (just over £9,200 pa). From this he has to pay self-catering accommodation (just over £6k this year) and he has the rest to live on. It works out at a monthly 'allowance' of £300 from Sept-June from which he has to fund food, travel, socialising and anything else. I send the occasional additional treat - i.e. one weekend his whole flat went down with a nasty cold so I sent a Deliveroo gift voucher to DS so they could all share a takeaway. But that's a one-off kind of thing.

Hadtochangeforthisone · 15/01/2023 22:02

That's what poor people&!their kids do when they want their kids to go to Uni

DontMakeMeShushYou · 15/01/2023 22:03

DS gets minimum loan so I pay for the shortfall between his loan and his accommodation costs and give him some extra so he has enough to spend. I don't top up to the full loan as he doesn't need that much. We also pay his mobile phone.

EwwSprouts · 15/01/2023 22:04

We top it up to the maximum loan. Phone contract was a birthday present and I send him back with a couple of bags of food. Next year is going to be a nightmare as the cost of 52 week accommodation is greater than the maximum loan before we start on food and a modest social life. He works a bit now in the holidays but this summer needs a proper job.

Copasetic · 15/01/2023 22:05

Mine is at Uni of Birmingham and we send £80 pw all year round and pay £20 pm for her phone. She gets minimum loan and her rent is always about £1000 which she pays from savings from a gap year before going and working in the summer holidays. She doesn't work any other time. She doesn't spend much on food or go out much (other than dance classes) but that covers all travel, any events that come up, all clothes, toiletries, Christmas and birthday presents etc. She finds that some months she doesn't spend it and it builds up and then she'll have a more expensive time so all in all it seems about right.

DuchessOfDisco · 15/01/2023 22:06

Nothing. But dd gets the maximum loan. I think most parents top up the difference

Bingo78 · 15/01/2023 22:06

DD gets minimum maintenance loan and so we pay the difference between that and her accommodation which works out at us paying £2500 approx towards it. Then, we give her £200 per month plus pay her phone and Spotify/Netflix. She has a part time job also to pay for holidays and extra luxuries. She says she can survive food and basic going out on £200 per month.

rogueone · 15/01/2023 22:06

My DC is only getting the minimum from student t finance and it doesn’t cover her rent. So she gets £140 a week from us and we pay £600 towards rent. She may get a job but we are letting her settle in

cestlavielife · 15/01/2023 22:07

Minimum loan
400 a month
Big shop on drop off each term
Outside london

autienotnaughty · 15/01/2023 22:07

Dd gets a loan which covers accommodation and leaves about £150 a month spare. We give her £100 a month on top and pay fon. She works too.
