Usual advice.

Stay away from St Mark's Square for food and drink unless you want to pay well over the odds. Maybe a coffee just to soak up the evening atmosphere.

Explore the side routes, lots of little squares with bars and restaurants.

Look for restaurants which have direct access for gondoliers. A row of gondolas tied up in the canal outside is a good sign you have found as 'transport cafe'. So long as the staff are friendly if you go in, you know you have hit gold.

Walking around Venice looking for this kind of local is a pleasure in itself.

We also did one drink in Harry's Bar and a visit to the open air market for delicious deli style morsels of cheese etc for snacks in our room.

Get up early at least one day to admire the beautiful light.

Have a wonderful time.

I loved Venice in April.

We stayed in a lovely guest house: villastella.com/en/contacts/ we enjoyed a lovely breakfast every morning in their garden.
It's located on the long thin island where the Venice film festival is held and there is a lovely beach and a 10 min valaretto to St Mark's Square. The valaretto is also the one that goes right down the grand canal and you can usually get a good seat as the lido is the first stop.

Get a valaretto pass for 3 days and travel unlimited around the place. You can use this to visit Murano and Burano islands too.

Spent time in the student quarter (Dorsoduro) for cheaper drinks. Eat tapas at the bar rather than sitting down (as the Venetians do!).

Don't book accomodation in Lido de Jeslo or Mestre. These aren't in Venice.

Walk around aimlessly.

Visit the Da Vinci Museum.

Visit the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute for the best views (I think it's still free!)

For a great view of the city, the rooftop terrace was lovely, you need to book in advance but it is free.

We also did Murano and Burano by water bus, there is no need to book in advance, we just bought tickets on the day
