Rhyming slang - do you routinely use any in everyday speech ?

I do but only two expressions, namely 'butcher's' (butcher's hook) = look and 'two and eight' = state. I don't think I use anything else. It's not a West Yorkshire thing AFAIK but seems to have minutely invaded my vocabulary.

I use a lot of the ones mentioned here, but I also always call a curry a ruby. My DH (Irish) gets so confused.

midsomermurderess · 16/01/2023 23:25

Are you having a giraffe?

MaryBerrysCamelToe · 16/01/2023 23:28

I say
He's having a 'hairy canary' for tantrum
And my family say 'molly' for molly dancer- cancer, I don't particularly like this one by my Nan and grandad hated the word cancer so always referred to their disease as 'the molly'.

I had no idea scarpered was rhyming slang!! ‘Posh’ RP here and I certainly use porkies, scarpered, half inch and probably some others.

StaunchMomma · 16/01/2023 23:32

I do like good Berk 😁

Berkeley Hunt - Cunt

Thunderpunt · 16/01/2023 22:23

Jeremy Hunt....

Yep often used at work

AdoraBell · 16/01/2023 23:38

Not really, grew up in the east end of London but no one in family and school never used cockney rhyming slang.

HaggisBurger · 16/01/2023 23:39

I do like good Berk 😁

Is that what berk is from ? I’d no idea 😂

no idea that scarpered and brassic were derived from rhyming slang either.

i say cream crackered and that’s about it.

orangelotus · 17/01/2023 11:05

i love the new ones ! We are all from East london
my favourite is bag for life - wife!!!
My Dh did a job for an old bloke who said "Can I pay you with a nice bit of Tom ?"!
( Tom Foolery - jewellery.)

midsomermurderess · 17/01/2023 12:06

It’s Berkshire Hunt, not Berkeley.

WildRosie · 17/01/2023 21:55

I'd forgotten about 'half inch'. It's another I use frequently. 'Dustbin lid' or just 'bin lid' are, possibly questionable, rhyming slang for 'Yid', as in Jew. I don't know if these are Cockney or Jewish in origin. Likewise, 'four by two'.

Curious how Berkshire ( pronounced Bark) relates to Berk (pronounced Burk) ?

Ive lived in London for over 40 years and have family here. I know a fair bit but don’t use it daily.

Tigresswoods · 17/01/2023 22:11

Nope, I'm in Scotland and we don't really use those here. I do speak a mix of Scot's and English automatically though.

HadEnoughOfBears · 17/01/2023 22:33

I'm in Scotland and I would regularly use Hank Marvin, Half inch, Pete Tong, brassic, having a giraffe and a couple of others.
Also the Scottish one: "what's the Hampden'" 🤣

Davros · 17/01/2023 23:11

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 16/01/2023 22:53

Another one with a heady mix of Polari, Yiddish and rhyming slang.

Me and DH too. I use a lot of rhyming slang. We live in hampstead (not teeth) and both went to private schools. But we consider ourselves to be hardcore Londoners!

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 17/01/2023 23:16

Same here, @Davros . North London born, bred and schooled.

AllMyExesWearRolexes · 17/01/2023 23:57

What's the Bobby (Moore) = what's the score ie what's going on?
Saucepan / dustbin lids = kids
Four by two = Jew
Daisies, from Daisy Roots = boots
Sherbert (dab) = cab / taxi
North (& South) = mouth
Irish (jig) = wig
You're having a Steffi / Turkish = having a laugh

DoorstoManual · 18/01/2023 00:04
