How do you pronounce the word 'put'?

I've spent the weekend entirely confused by the word 'put'. Apparently it's a red/tricky word in phonics but surely it's just a phonetic pronunciation and rhymes with cut or but. Is it a dialect thing? Or have I been pronouncing put wrong my entire life?

Cut and But rhyme for me. Put and putt sound exactly the same.

I think though that in a posher accent, cut sounds more like cat and therefore wouldn’t rhyme?

I'm in NI. Most of us say put to rhyme with foot, boot, loot, soot. We pronounce all those 'oo' words exactly the same way. I can't think of how to say foot and soot differently, it's so ingrained😅😅

Really - isn't it funny!
I know even different parts of the city I'm in say things differently or different age groups.
I remember moving from one side of the city to the other and people always saying how posh my accent was (it wasn't! but where I am now is much more 'broad' Yorkshire!)

Sorry that was supposed to be to @ODFOx

This thread is baffling to me. I was oblivious all of this 😅

Toomanywaterwipes · 16/01/2023 14:33

I'm surprised that quite a lot of people here seem to be a bit baffled by these differences in pronunciation. This is the sort of thing that makes accents, isn't it?

KimberleyClark · 16/01/2023 15:13

Same here.

I can’t think how to say foot and soot differently either but loot sounds completely different in my accent!

@FruitToast funnily enough a very apt clip came up on my instagram feed today.

Check out the profile stage door johnny (with underscores instead of spaces but I can't do that without making it underline the word). His post called Meeting About The 'OO' Words.

I think I now understand why I thought most of the poetry I read in school was shite and didn't even rhyme 😂

Whataplanker · 17/01/2023 20:51

I'm with you OP!
Cut, but, put, foot, soot, mutt, putt, butt all sound the same to me with a short u. I don't understand how you would say put any differently to cut etc!

Boot, hoot, moot don't as they have the long oo sound.

I'm in the NW.

Older scousers tend to say book, cook with a long oo. My DD used to be quite indignant about it to my MIL when she was first learning phonics in school!

Whataplanker · 17/01/2023 20:54

I'm a reception teacher and have often wondered how people with a more southern accent teach children the short a sound e.g. bath/grass when, to me, they say bahth/grahss.

BertieBotts · 17/01/2023 21:56

They teach those sounds with cat, mat, sat. Those don't have a long A!
