Why would someone ask for your number then ignore your texts?

I’ve been going to the same beautician for a year to get my eyebrows done, we always have a good talk and seem to have got on really well as we seem to have a lot in common and she always seemed excited and happy to see me. Last time I went she asked for my number so we could meet for drinks, and said I was a friend to her. I was very touched by this as we had a lot in common and it was lovely that she asked for my number so we can have drinks. So I text her after and say hey, look forward to arranging to meet you for a drink, she doesn’t reply. I text again saying I left her a review with the link she gave me, no reply. Then I text saying merry Christmas, she replies and says she will get in touch soon with kisses etc, then I text saying happy new year, no reply again, so obviously I’ve gave up now.

I now have no desire to go back to have my eyebrows done by her as it seems she doesn’t want to speak or see me again. I feel really sad as I was looking forward to having a nice chat over a drink or two with her. Is it something I said that annoyed her? Is there something wrong with me as a person? It’s got me feeling really pathetic and down about myself as a person.

I'd just leave it, people are wierd.

This sort of thing is one of the reasons I don't go to beauticians or hairdressers.

The pretendy friendship nonsense

Zola1 · 15/01/2023 15:48

Stop messaging her, she's probably just busy and forgetful. If she wants to meet up I'm sure she will let you know but otherwise she's just your eyebrow girl so don't get too hung up on it. I've plenty of friends I intend to catch up with but rarely manage to as life gets in the way

Something similar happened to me years ago.

I blocked and deleted her. People are weird.

Doubt there’s anything wrong with you! There's something wrong with her for saying she wants something that she can’t actually be bothered to arrange. Mixed messages. Even if it does get off the ground it’s hard to be friends with people like that as you never know where you stand.

SunshineAndFizz · 15/01/2023 16:03

Bet she's expecting to leave the salon soon and is collecting numbers so she can poach clients when she goes.

This!

Ultimately if you are already second guessing yourself this is probably not a friendship worth having.

I think it's just what (some) people do OP, I don't think there's any malicious intent and they probably in the moment do think ' oh it would be nice to meet' or even just think that is what the person wants to hear. We also never really know what's going on in people's lives.

None of it is in the least bit a reflection on you. She doesn't know you well enough for it to be one and even if she did - other people's treatment of us doesn't dictate what we deserve or our value. It oftentimes says something about them (good or bad) and is worth observing but not worth fixating on.

I would just go and enjoy the interaction when you're there, if you did before. Just because she hasn't text back or isn't inclined to meet outside of work doesn't mean she isn't pleased to see you when you went in or that she doesn't enjoy talking to you or like you as a person. Equally if you would rather go elsewhere then do so, but either way I'd try to let it all go.

Sounds like she was after the review

I’ve just deleted the review I wrote for her, so if that’s what she was after she’s not got it now. I have no intention of texting her again since saying happy new year to her, I just feel so sad and let down that people aren’t genuine these days.

Good point about the review

orangegato · 15/01/2023 16:31

She may be ND. I have all the intentions to initiate contact with someone I like but my acute anxiety and self doubt makes me literally recoil in practice.

This could be it.

Not the point. This is quite common.

An extremely manipulate way of doing this - an offer of a night out and calling you a friend.

CheekyRubyFox · 31/03/2024 18:05

Why not suggest a big sign around the OP's neck saying manipulate then ignore me how many times you want.

SheepAndSword · 31/03/2024 18:18

A lot of people can be false like this - beware of gushiness!
